Hornsby talks Texas offer and more

HOUSTON — Texas offered a 2020 in-state quarterback on Thursday. The excitement was felt throughout the Hornsby home.
Austin High’s dual-threat Malik Hornsby received an offer from Tim Beck and the Longhorns yesterday. It was the one he wanted.
“It just feels great,” said Hornsby. “I’ve been waiting on it for awhile. When it finally happened, I let the staff know how much I appreciated them believing in me.”
At 6-foot-1, 185-pound, Hornsby was named District 24-5A Co-Offensive MVP after his sophomore campaign. He was also honored as the District 24-5A Offensive Newcomer of the Year. Though unranked, he currently holds nine offers including Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Arizona, and Arkansas. He won’t be unranked for long.
The invitation from Texas to continue his athletic career was something special in the Hornsby home.

“For starters, it’s close to home,” Hornsby said. “My mom was really excited. She told me ‘now you have a reason to stay close to home.’ Secondly, I’m a big fan of Vince Young. I watch his highlights on YouTube and love that we’re from the same hometown. And I look really good in burnt orange.”
For Hornsby, it’s not just the relationships he’s building with the UT staff, including Bryan Carrington, Texas’ Director of Recruiting. It’s the schematic fit to Herman’s Power Spread offense.
“I love (Texas) scheme,” Hornsby explained. “It’s my favorite offense. If I do commit to Texas, I will be more developed and be a better QB at the next level. The offense fits my strengths and that’s exciting.”
We’ve seen what a Herman-coached signal-caller looks like: Braxton Miller, JT Barrett, Greg Ward, and recently signed Cam Rising and Casey Thompson. If you count UT’s C/O 2019 commit, Roschon Johnson, there’s a pattern; athletic, dual threats with the ability to push the ball downfield and improvise when the play breaks down.
Hornsby will visit Texas on June 4th and 5th for summer camp. He’ll also attend SMU’s camp on June 1st.
