If you paid close attention to the 2024 college football season you likely came to the conclusion that Texas should have finished the season ranked No. 3 or No. 4 with No. 1 and No. 2 being reserved for the National Championship Game participants.

Ohio State is obviously a very well deserved No. 1 and Notre Dame should be No. 2 even if it’s plausible the semifinal played in the Cotton Bowl between Ohio State and Texas was the de facto NCG.

I would have Texas No. 3 but could understand a No. 4 ranking if coaches wanted to put 13-1 Oregon at No. 3. Penn State also received a lot of top 4 love which at times pushed Texas to No. 5.

Let’s see how a number of college coaches voted Texas.

Ryan Day, Ohio State
Texas No. 5
Oregon No. 3, Penn State No. 4. One team came close to knocking out the Buckeyes and it wasn’t those two. Texas travels to Columbus for the 2025 opener on August 30th.

Kirby Smart, Georgia
Texas No. 5
The Horns advancing to the semifinals allowed Smart to justify putting Georgia at No. 4 behind No. 3 Oregon. As frustrating as it might be, it’s tough to fault Smart for having Georgia ahead of a team he beat twice.

Major Applehwite, South Alabama
Texas No. 3

Tim Beck, Coastal Carolina
Texas No. 3

David Braun, Northwestern
Texas No. 6…
Braun had Penn State and Georgia ahead of Texas. I hope Penn State sees your vote, Coach.

Fran Brown, Syracuse
Texas No. 4
The former Georgia DC had the Bulldogs at No. 6

Neal Brown, West Virginia
Texas No. 4
Brown had Penn State No. 3 rather than Oregon.

Troy Calhoun, Air Force
Texas No. 5
Calhoun had Oregon No. 2, Notre Dame No. 3, and Georgia No. 4. Coach must have been in a flight simulator when OSU and Oregon met in the playoffs.

Kenny Dillingham, Arizona State
Texas No. 3
Dillingham put ASU at No. 5 and Oregon at No. 6. Always be crootin’.

Mike Elko, Texas A&M
Texas No. 3
A&M unranked.

James Franklin, Penn State
Texas No. 5
Franklin had Oregon at No. 3 and Penn State at No. 4. That’s justifiable.

Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame
Texas No. 3

Brent Key, Georgia Tech
Texas No. 6
Key nearly beat Georgia who he placed at No. 5. “If we nearly beat Georgia, and Georgia beat Texas twice, then….”

Dan Lanning, Oregon
Texas No. 4
Oregon No. 3

Lance Leipold, Kansas
Texas No. 5
He had Oregon and Penn State at No. 3 and 4

Joey McGuire, Texas Tech
Texas No. 4

Much of the list was chalk with Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Texas at No. 1, 2, and 3. Texas finished No. 3 in the coaches poll.
