Baseball scores 18 in win over The Citadel

After a brutal stretch of games, losing four of five contests dating back to a home loss to Texas State on March 9, the No. 2 Longhorns returned to winning ways on Wednesday with an 18-run barrage versus The Citadel.

Texas came back from an early three-run deficit by scoring six runs in the third inning, five runs in the seventh inning, and seven runs in the ninth inning. Travis Sthele, who pitched 3.2 innings of shutout ball with eight strikeouts, took home his second victory of the season in an 18-4 win.

Trey Faltine, Ivan Melendez, and Silas Ardoin all knocked balls out of Riley Park in Charleston, S.C., with Ardoin’s of the grand slam variety. That trio combined to drive in eight of Texas’ 18 runs.

Every member of the starting nine recorded a base hit, and all but one member of the original starting lineup drove in at least one run. Ardoin’s four RBI led the way, followed by two RBI apiece from Melendez, Faltine, Murphy Stehly, and Skyler Messinger.

Jared Southard allowed the only Citadel run over the final 4.1 innings on a solo shot from Ryan McCarthy. Aside from that hit, Southard, Cameron Dayton, Sam Walbridge, Coy Cobb, Zane Morehouse combined limit McCarthy to the only hit over the final portion of the game.

Texas finishes its South Carolina spring break trip with a record of 2-3. The Longhorns return home for a weekend series with Incarnate Word beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
