Schaefer continues to find postseason success in his tenure
After defeating the Fairfield Stags 70-52 on Friday and topping the Utah Utes 78-56 on Sunday, Texas women’s basketball is in the Sweet 16 in back-to-back years for the first time since 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Four Longhorns scored in double-figures on Sunday against Utah to set up a showdown with the winner of Monday’s game between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the LSU Tigers. Aaliyah Moore scored a game-high 21 points, Aliyah Matharu added 14 points, Rori Harmon scored 11 points, and Joanne Allen-Taylor contributed 12 points. Allen-Taylor also never left the floor, playing all 40 minutes.
The Longhorns were 35-of-55 from the field, most of those two-point attempts. Texas shot from outside the arc six times against Utah, converting three opportunities.
Schaefer, now in his second season at Texas, has helped the Horns into the Sweet 16 in both postseasons with him at the helm. This is his sixth career Sweet 16 appearance as a head coach, with two at Texas and four at Mississippi State.
The Longhorns look to advance to the program’s 11th Elite Eight and just their fourth this century with a win on Friday.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
After playing in the comfortable confines of the Frank Erwin Center for the final time in Longhorn athletic department history, Schaefer’s club heads to Spokane, Wash. to attempt to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2003.
Baseball sweeps Incarnate Word, remains No. 2
After a disappointing road trip to South Carolina, Texas baseball swept the Incarnate Word Cardinals with 19-2, 10-2, and 12-0 victories.
In the Sunday shutout, Lucas Gordon pitched 7.0 innings of four-hit ball, striking out four and walking none in his 80-pitch outing. Though UIW doesn’t compare to the offensive threat that Texas Tech will provide in Lubbock next week to begin Big 12 play, the performance from Gordon offers head coach David Pierce a little more confidence in the player he’s chosen to replace Tanner Witt on Sundays.
Gordon was followed by quick innings from Jared Southard and Aaron Nixon. The top of the ninth inning flew by, as Nixon needed just six pitches to get the job done. The Longhorns host Central Arkansas on Tuesday before they travel to West Texas to begin conference play.
Texas remained No. 2 in the most recent D1Baseball.com poll, one spot behind top-ranked Ole Miss.
