ITYT: Summarizing Texas Football's Fall Camp Scrimmage No. 2

Eric Nahlinby:Eric Nahlin08/18/24

Inside Texas’ Joe Cook and Eric Nahlin took to the YouTube airwaves to discuss Texas’ most recent practice. In a position by position breakdown, they hit the high points from the most recent scrimmage. One of the themes of camp has been the defense’s quality play. While Pete Kwiatkowski’s side of the ball had a solid day, the offense evened things out a bit on Saturday.

Last week the quarterbacks got off to a slow start, but as Cook and Nahlin discuss, Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning fared much better this week as they combined for 10 points in their first drives.

With the spate of running back injuries, both Jaydon Blue and Tre Wisner wore green non-contact injuries. Freshman running back, Jerrick Gibson, was said to be getting more comfortable by the practice with his increased workload.

Juan Davis is poised to be a breakout player but to what degree remains the question. He is seeing increased snap allocation as an H-back who is often on the move before the snap. Davis combines strong athleticism and good physical intent. He could become an X-factor for Steve Sarkisian‘s play calling.

New starting right tackle Cameron Williams was mentioned as doing a good job of staying in front of Ethan Burke. If he can do that, it’s easy to project Williams as having a solid first season at minimum. Williams is slimmer and quicker than he was a year ago.

The wide receivers had an uncharacteristically quiet day but that’s part and parcel with the secondary having its best practice of the camp.

Safety Jelani McDonald, who did receive some reps with the ones, was singled out as having a strong day in coverage. His ‘corner’ skill set stood out when matched up one on one with the receiver. McDonald’s range and length has him as someone to watch this season.

Freshman linebacker Tyanthony Smith had another strong showing with the second team defense. With his range and diagnostics, he has the look of a future star. Anthony Hill had a quiet day, but that was by design. He didn’t play a whole lot. He’s one of the most important players on the entire team.

Defensive tackles rotated a lot with Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton as the starter. Nahlin is leveraged on Broughton having a strong season but he feels good about it, especially when a source mentions Broughton’s first step as being special.
