Recruiting: Jahdae Barron joins UT's 2020 class

Just when you thought the 2020 class was complete.

After receiving a release from his Baylor letter of intent, 2020 Pflugerville Connally DB Jahdae Barron committed to Texas today.

The four-star corner chose UT over recent offers from Mississippi State, Virginia Tech, and Washington State, and other offers prior to his signing from Oklahoma State, TCU, Houston, Iowa State, and Texas Tech.

How he fits at Texas: Barron is a fluid, skilled athlete who plays pretty fast, particularly on defense where he gets excited to play downhill at speed and lay some licks on opposing ball carriers. He has some good ball skills and might translate best at safety where he could put them to work playing the ball in the air while in zone or closing and tackling. He’ll probably start his collegiate career at corner but his knack for playing at depth and getting his eyes in the right spots would translate best in the Texas defense at safety. – Ian Boyd

Coach says: Strengths – A lean athlete with room to add bulk. Has long arms which he uses effectively in press situations (as both DB and WR). A long-strider with decent long speed. Has a verified 100m time just under 11 seconds. Fluid hips with very good change of direction and decent lateral movement. Has some good ball skills with soft hands. Catches away from his body. Shows a good variety of zone and man on film with physical play throughout. He stays in phase with WR and doesn’t overcommit too soon. A willing, if not productive, tackler. Looks to be a finisher when he has the ball. Plays both safety and corner on film with some good film at each position. Areas for Improvement – Tackling form, while very good at times, is inconsistent. Not sure how much his track speed translates into pads. Needs to tuck the football away more consistently. Unclear how he will do against a physical college WR.
