Banks and Barron were both named first-team All-Americans by the AP earlier this week. Barron was a second-team All-American according to the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the American Football Coaches Association, while Banks was added to the WCFF’s and AFCA’s first teams.
Barron, the winner of the Thorpe Award honoring the nation’s top defensive back, needs one more selector to name him as a first-team All-American to earn consensus first-team status. A first-team All-SEC selection and a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Barron led the conference and ranked third in the nation in interceptions with five. He notched 47 tackles with 2.0 for loss and 1.0 sack, plus one forced fumble and nine pass breakups.
Banks earned consensus first-team status earlier this week with his third All-American selection via the AP. Now with four first-team nods, Banks is one selection from The Sporting News away from unanimous first-team All-American honors.
Banks was also the winner of the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy. A starter of 12 games at left tackle, Banks has been a mainstay at the position over the last three seasons. After leaving the Texas A&M game and missing the Georgia battle for the SEC Championship, Banks felt confident Monday he’d be able to suit up and take the field at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium against the Clemson Tigers.
Entering this season, The University of Texas boasted 152 players who have earned 195 All-America honors. Banks became the 64th consensus All-American and hopes to become the 25th unanimous All-American in program history.
Texas battles Clemson in the first round of the 2024 College Football Playoff on Saturday at 3 p.m.
