Jahdae Barron to return to Texas for his fifth season

Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron will return to Texas in 2024 and utilize his year of eligibility afforded to him by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he announced on Saturday.

Barron, who tallied 59 tackles, forced one fumble, and intercepted Jalen Milroe in the Longhorns’ 34-24 win over Alabama, will be a key part of Texas’ debut season at the Star position in Longhorns defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense.

Barron has been a critical part of the Longhorn defense for the past three seasons. In 2022, he tallied 74 tackles with 1.0 sacks and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown. He also had two interceptions.

In 2021, he tallied 18 tackles with one forced fumbles. In 2020, he had three total tackles as part of the Longhorns’ special teams.

Barron has long said one of his career goals is to win the Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top defensive back. Barron was named a semifinalist for the Thorpe in 2023 but did not achieve finalist honors. He returns to Texas with his sights set on joining Michael Huff and Aaron Ross in elite company.

A member of Texas’ 2020 class, Barron was ranked as the No. 413 overall prospect, the No. 36 cornerback, and the No. 58 player in Texas according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a proprietary algorithm that complies ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services.

On3 did not have a ranking for Barron. He currently has an On3 NIL Valuation of $275,000
