Jerrin Thompson commits to Texas

LUFKIN — The Texas staff offered Jerrin Thompson on July 23rd. They built a relationship with Thompson prior to extending an offer, but the offer made it clear he was wanted in Austin.

Today, Thompson decided he wanted to be in Austin.

The 6-foot-0, 183-pound defensive back from Lufkin chose the Longhorns over offers from Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, TCU, Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss.

“It was the best fit for me and my family,” Thompson told IT. “It’s close to home too. This place is amazing. It’s all about family and winning.”

But what type of player will Texas get from the four-star from #bEASTtexas?

“A guy who’s willing to do whatever it takes to help the team win,” said Thompson. “Safety, nickel, corner, it doesn’t matter. Whatever it takes.”

Ian Boyd on Thompson: At 6-foot-0, 183 pounds with testing numbers like a 4.6 40, 4.2 shuttle, and 32″ vertical, Thompson is a nice athletic prospect for the secondary. He has proven effectiveness both as a tackler coming down in run support from a field safety position as well as playing the ball in the air. He’s had 185 tackles, 22 pass break-ups, and five INTs over the last two seasons at Lufkin. The measurables and skill could make him a fit at nickel but he may end up back at field or boundary safety if his ability to play the ball from zone is his better attribute than playing man coverage underneath on slots. Where he slots his ability to close and tackle will be immensely valuable for building spread-busting packages that can stop the run while flooding the field with versatile athletes.

Thompson is the 14th member of Texas’ 2020 class joining Ethan Pouncey (Winter Park, FL), Bijan Robinson (Salpointe Catholic – AZ), Andrej Karic (Southlake Carroll), Van Fillinger (Corner Canyon – UT), Vernon Broughton (Cy-Ridge), Prince Dorbah (Highland Park), Kitan Crawford (John Tyler), Ja’Quinden Jackson (Duncanville), Jaden Hullaby (Mansfield Timberview), Jaylen Garth (Port Neches-Groves), Jake Majors (Prosper), Logan Parr (Helotes O’Connor), and Hudson Card (Lake Travis).
