Texas ace Jared Spencer had to leave his Thursday night start versus Auburn last week after just 2.2 innings. While Jim Schlossnagle and company expected the lefty transfer from Indiana State to miss a start, Spencer may be out for a more extended amount of time.

Speaking on AM 1300 The Zone with Mike Hardge and Mark Henry Thursday morning, Schlossnagle provided a gloomy update on the Longhorns’ Friday night starter.

“Jared is going to visit with some medical people today, him and his family, and try to figure out what the best long term decision is for him,” Schlossnagle said. “We should know more by the end of the day. He’s certainly not going to pitch this weekend or pitch, I wouldn’t think, unless we get some awesome news or some creative ideas from wherever he goes today.”

Spencer is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 52.1 innings in 2025 with opponents hitting just .215 against him. Likely stepping into his place as the No. 1 starter according to Schlossnagle is Ruger Riojas. In 13 appearances with five starts, Riojas is 7-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 48.2 innings. Opponents are hitting .221 against him.

“We knew that after Thursday night (Spencer) was going to have to at least skip one start,” Schlossnagle said. “We tried to prepare for it over the course of last weekend. We wanted Ruger to throw a little bit Saturday, then get him out as soon as we could. We like his mentality and who he is as a person and as a pitcher to handle Friday night.”

Schlossnagle said Luke Harrison will remain the Saturday starter. While any official communication from the program is likely to list the Sunday starter as TBA, Schlossnagle said to expect to see Jason Flores on the bump on Sunday.

Harrison is 3-0 this season with a 2.98 ERA and a .241 batting average against. Flores is 4-1 in 2025 in 11 appearances with a 1.61 ERA across 28.0 innings. Opponents are hitting .179 against him.

Schlossnagle mentioned also that left fielder Jonah Williams “tweaked something in his leg” versus Texas State on Tuesday night but added “I think he’s fine.”

“We took him out real quick to give us the best chance for him to be back out there this weekend,” Schlossnagle said. “We’ll see how he feels today and tomorrow.”
