Jim Schlossnagle, Dylan Volantis take home SEC honors

Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle was named the Southeastern Conference coach of the year and lefty reliever Dylan Volantis earned SEC freshman of the year accolades, the league announced Monday.

Schlossnagle, in his first year as head coach of the Longhorns, led Texas to an outright regular season conference title. The Longhorns are 42-11 with a 22-8 mark in the SEC and are the No. 1 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament. Texas enters the weekend ranked No. 2 in the most recent D1Baseball top 25.
Volantis became the Longhorns’ top arm out of the bullpen, and posted a 4-0 record and a 1.66 ERA in 43.1 innings of work. He notched 12 saves and allowed opponents to hit just .176 against him. Volantis was also named a first-team All-SEC selection and an freshman All-SEC selection. He was recently named a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes award
One other Longhorn, Rylan Galvan, joined Volantis on the All-SEC first team. Galvan slashed .299/.453/.635 with a 1.088 OPS. He recorded 50 hits and led Texas with 14 homers. He also drove in 46 runs.
No Longhorn was named to the All-SEC second team.
Galvan had several teammates join him on the All-SEC defensive team including second baseman Ethan Mendoza, first baseman Kimble Schuessler, and outfielder Will Gasparino.
Texas’ next game is Thursday at 3 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala.
