Virginia big man transfer Kadin Shedrick committed to Texas on Sunday, becoming the first commitment of the Rodney Terry era in Austin.
The 6-foot-10.5, 230-pound power forward with two years to play made official visits to Texas and Missouri last week with the Longhorns visit being head and shoulders above the trip with Tigers. Terry and assistant coach Frank Haith were instrumental in the recruitment of the North Carolina native. Haith’s connections in the Tar Heel State run deep from playing at Elon, to coaching at three colleges in the state and recruiting in the state as a head coach. Haith is no stranger to recruiting the state as an assistant at Texas. He signed P.J. Tucker out of Enloe High in Raleigh in the 2003 class.
The addition of Shedrick provides the Longhorns with a big, athletic body in the paint with skill and feel for the game. He scored in double figures in a third of the games played in the last two seasons, including three double-doubles during the 2021-22 season.
With Dylan Disu back, the Longhorns suddenly have a nice combo of size and skill in the paint, and a duo that can play extended minutes together. The Longhorns play with a big lineup thanks to Disu’s ability to play facing up at the three-point line.

Shedrick signed with Virginia out of Holly Springs High as the No. 65 ranked prospect in the 2019 class. He chose Virginia over offers from Xavier (made official visit), Arizona State, Creighton, UConn, Georgia Tech, Illinois and others.
Shedrick by the numbers
Shedrick averaged 6.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 30 games this season, including 15 starts. Those numbers were a slight drop off from the 2021-22 season. He averaged 6.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks that season, which included 19 starts.
All told, Shedrick appeared in 76 games for the Cavaliers, including 34 starts. He is a career 63.4% shooter from the field, and 74.2% from the free throw line.
