Texas offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Kyle Flood spoke to the media on Friday only days before No. 3 Texas’ Sugar Bowl battle with No. 2 Washington. He discussed his relationship with head coach Steve Sarkisian as the two lead the vaunted Longhorns offensive attack.

“I’ve been fortunate now to be with Coach Sarkisian for seven years, seven seasons, from Atlanta to
Alabama and now, obviously, here at Texas,” said Flood. “I’ve always felt this way as somebody who works with the linemen and certainly heavy — heavily involved in the run game and the protections — and that’s kind of the world that I live in, more so than anything.”

When your head coach is a former college quarterback, you know he’ll have ample input in the offensive game plans. Not to mention Sarkisian is known as an excellent play-caller.

“I think my biggest job for him in terms of the play-calling is to know what he likes,” Flood explained. “I need to know what he likes to call in the games, because that’s really where I — I spend my focus during the week, to make sure I’m giving him the options that he wants to call on game day. What makes him — and I’ve said this publicly before — I don’t shy away from saying it now: I think he’s the best play-caller that I certainly have ever worked with and I think maybe the top play-caller in all of football right now.”

Most offensive coordinators desire the play-calling ability. But Flood and Sarkisian have found a strong system that works where it benefits both. Flood isn’t just recruiting and developing large humans across the offensive line, he’s working with Sarkisian to build out the best offense possible. And it appears to be working fantastically.

It’s not just in building the weekly game plan, but Flood is also assisting in exp in-game tendencies and making adjustments throughout the game.

“I think what makes him that is his ability to see the game in real time,” said Flood. “It’s not just about the game plan and what we’ve looked at on film. I think as the game is happening and as the teams that we’re playing are adjusting, he’s adjusting with them. And I think that makes him unique, his ability to do that at a really high level.”
