LIVE UPDATES: NCAA tournament - No. 6 Texas vs. No. 11 Virginia Tech (3:30 p.m., TBS)

The six-seed Texas Longhorns are in the NCAA tournament for the first time under first-year head coach Chris Beard, taking on the ACC tournament champion Virginia Tech Hokies.

Starting lineup: Marcus Carr, Courtney Ramey, Andrew Jones, Christian Bishop, Timmy Allen.

First half

20:00 – Virginia Tech turns it over to start, but Texas follows it up with a brick from Carr. Both teams remained scoreless through the first two minutes, with both teams starting 0-for-4. Keve Aluma scores the first bucket and the second. Texas is yet to make a shot. 4-0 VT

15:49 – Allen scores the first points of the game for the Longhorns with a back-down lay in. He adds two more at the line, then Texas responds to two Hokie points with a Jase Febres three. As a result of a Bishop foul, VT nets an and-one to make it 11-7 early. Six offensive rebounds through 7:30 for Texas, one leading to a Jones three. VT and Texas trade threes. 14-13 VT

11:18 – Bishop adds two out of the media timeout after a Hokie missed mid-range jumper. Jones hits a three after 30-second defense from the Longhorns, his third, to punctuate an 8-0 run before VT responds. Texas’ first turnover is the result of a shot clock violation just before the under-eight timeout, but Brock Cunningham forces a Hokie turnover on the other end. 18-18

7:48 – Dylan Disu misses a teardrop but Cunningham draws an offensive foul on the other end. Disu draws a foul and hits both. With VT’s Keve Aluma with two fouls, Texas goes small in response for a brief moment. VT responds with a post bucket, but Carr hits an elbow jumper on the other end. Virginia Tech hits a corner three to take the lead 23-22. 23-22 VT

3:46 – Hokies hit two free throws out of the timeout. Jones hits another three-pointer to tie it, his fourth. Each team trades buckets, including Jones’ 14th point. VT hits an elbow jumper, but Allen heads to the line after a Hokie timeout with 55.6 left in the half. Allen hits one of two, then Justyn Mutts does the same on the other end. Jones hits another three, his fifth, to give Texas a 31-30 lead, but Storm Murphy picks up a foul and hits both at the line. Carr hits a half-court shot at the buzzer to take a 34-32 lead. Texas 34-32

Second half

20:00 – Both teams traded buckets to start the half. Allen then went to the line after drawing a foul in transition, hitting one of two at the line. Bishop draws his third foul with 18:09 left in the game but Chris Beard leaves him in the game. Hunter Cattoor drives and scores to cut it the Texas lead to one but Allen responds in the lane with a floater. Texas surrenders points off a turnover for the first time all game, then Allen hits a free throw line jumper to reach double figures and make the lead three points. Carr then makes it a six-point game on a stepback three, and VT calls a timeout. Texas 44-38.

15:41 – VT hits a two but Carr hits a three to give Texas a seven-point lead, the Longhorns’ largest of the game. Hokies hit two free throws to make it a five-point contest, but Allen responds with an open jumper to make the lead seven points once again… or six after Carr’s three is made into a two. Horns hit 50 points after Disu gets his own miss and makes it an eight-point game. It remains that way until the under-12. Texas 50-42

11:31 – Out of the break, the Hokies hit 1-of-2 at the line. Bishop responds with a layup via Carr. Carr then comes back after a stop and hits a three, forcing a VT timeout with 10:33 left, and the Longhorns leading 55-43. A 16-5 run over the last six-and-a-half minutes, but the lead is cut to 10 after an Aluma bucket. Jones drives and goes to the line, hitting both. Bishop then grabs a steal and dunks it to make it a 14-point game. The Hokies turn it over again and foul Ramey, their seventh team foul. He hits both to make it a 14-3 run over almost six minutes until Cattoor hits a layup. 61-47 Texas

7:14 – Hokies turn the ball over out of the timeout. Texas misses a shot but Carr forces a turnover in the lane. Ramey then draws a foul, and hits the front end of the 1&1. VT then has a one-shot possession before Carr finds Bishop for his 10th point. Aluma hits a layup and makes the free throw on the foul. With two free throws, Virginia Tech makes it a 12-point game with 4:28 to go. Allen responds with two free throws on the other end ahead of the under-four timeout, but Texas commits a turnover and a foul to give VT two shots at the line to make it an 11-point game. One is missed, and one is made. Then, Ramey responds with a free-throw line jumper to make it at 13-point game with 3:32 left. Texas 68-55

3:32 – Out of the timeout, Carr hits a elbow jumper. On the other end, Allen fouls out after 14 points and six rebounds. VT hits two off the foul, but Ramey responds with a three to make it a 16-point game, 73-57. Mutts hits a two to make it 73-59, and VT calls a timeout with 1:32 left. With the game 74-62, Ramey heads to the line and hits both. After a technical foul on Cunningham, VT makes it a 10-point game but Texas takes possession with under a minute left. The Longhorns then turn it over and VT hits a three to make it a seven-point contest, making it a 7-0 run for the Hokies. Bishop is fouled in a dead-ball situation, making one to make it an eight-point game. Texas forces a turnover for a two, allows one, scores one, allows one, then gets the ball in and wins.
