LIVE UPDATES: No. 21 Texas battles the UTSA Roadrunners in Austin

The No. 21 Texas Longhorns take on the UTSA Roadrunners at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. on Longhorn Network. Texas looks to avoid any sort of letdown after a loss to then-No. 1 Alabama, while the Roadrunners try to upset their fellow UT System member.

Pregame

Quinn Ewers is on the field, albeit in T-shirt and shorts like every other Longhorn, throwing to receivers without a noticeable brace. Charles Wright is working right behind him. No sign of Hudson Card quite yet, but this is no indication of his current status.

Hudson Card has taken the field for pregame T-shirt and shorts warmups.

Quinn Ewers is dressed to play but he’s warming up with Cole Hutson as the “fourth” QB/OC tandem.

UTSA wins the toss and defers. Texas will receive.

First Quarter

Texas starts on the 25. A couple of carries from Bijan Robinson makes it 3rd and short, he’s stopped, but he gets the ball on fourth for a first. After a penalty and a few other plays that don’t go anywhere, a third down attempt falls short and Texas punts. It’s a touchback.

UTSA picks up a first down, but at what cost? An offensive lineman is on the field. Another pass to tight end Oscar Cardenas results in a first down near the 50. Frank Harris picks up a first down with his legs in Texas territory, and a penalty undoes a long touchdown pass for the Roadrunners. Facing 3rd and short, Harris finds Zakhari Franklin for a first down and the Roadrunners are moving the football.

Facing a 3rd and short at the 20, UTSA goes under center with the tight end and picks up the first with a sneak. Another 3rd and medium results in a first and goal after Texas misses several missed tackles on the perimeter.

With 3rd and goal to go, D’Shawn Jamison records a PBU. With 4th and goal to go, UTSA commits a penalty and brings on the FG unit. Field goal attempt is good. 3-0 UTSA 3:28

Texas opening play of its second drive is a long catch and run from Worthy for a first down. A first down in UTSA territory comes as the result of the run. On 3rd down in Roadrunner territory, Robinson is stuffed behind the line of scrimmage. Another UTSA penalty gets the first. Jordan Whittington takes a pass to get a first down as the quarter ends.

Second quarter

To start the second quarter, Ja’Tavion Sanders commits a holding penalty on an RPO. Most of the yardage is regained on a quick pass to Roschon Johnson to make it 2nd and short. Then on a quick pass, Johnson takes a pass from Card and runs into the end zone for a touchdown. 7-3 Texas 14:03

Will Stone kicks the ensuing kickoff out of bounds and UTSA takes over on the 35. UTSA quickly picks up a first down, then gets close to the sticks again with a quick out pass and moves into Texas territory. Harris picks up another first down on the ground, and the Roadrunners are inside the Texas 40. Another quick pass, another chunk of yards. Facing a third and short, Brady takes the ball and bounces off the line for a first down. Another third down ends up in a pass interference call on Ryan Watts and UTSA has 1st and goal at the two. Brady scores on a short run. 10-7 UTSA 10:07

UTSA kicks an onside and recovers. They then move into Texas territory with a swing pass to the 35. Then a trick play results in a touchdown reception by Franklin. 17-7 UTSA 9:36

Texas takes over on the 34, and gets to the 40 to set up third down. Johnson converts on third down to keep the chains moving. A pass to Worthy moves into UTSA territory and gives the Longhorns a first down. Another wing pass to Whittington with a nice block from Casey Cain gets another first down. Johnson takes another direct snap and picks up the first down with a nice hurdle. Texas has first and goal, but on 2nd and goal Robinson finds the end zone. 17-14 UTSA 5:20

Facing 2nd and long, Harris rolls out and finds a receiver for a first down. On a 3rd and long a few plays later, Texas stuffs a swing pass and forces a punt from UTSA.

Starting on the 12, Texas picks up a first down on third and short via a Robinson run. A pass to Robinson over the middle moves Texas into UTSA territory, and No. 5 puts a huge move on UTSA defenders. A Johnson run picks up another first. Facing 3rd and long, a pass falls incomplete. Bert Auburn hits a 44-yard field goal to tie it ahead of half. 17-17 0:12

UTSA kneels to end the half.

Third quarter

Texas kicks off to start the second half, and UTSA will start on the 25. UTSA faces a third and medium, Harris runs for the first down. On an incompletion, Barryn Sorrell is charged with a roughing the passer and UTSA picks up the first. Another third, but a short scramble doesn’t result in many yards for Harris. UTSA punts.

Texas starts on the 20 and picks up a few yards with Johnson. Then Robinson runs 78 yards for a score. 24-17 Texas 11:56

UTSA starts on the 25 and picks up a handful through the air. The Longhorn defense forces a third down, but Jamison notches a PBU and the Roadrunners have to punt.

The first play is a long pass from Card to Whittington to move deep into UTSA territory. A few negative plays make it third and long, and Texas can’t convert and will punt it back.

The next Roadrunner drive starts on the 14 and a nice run gets seven yards. Another run gets a first down. A long pass then picks up another first via Joshua Cephus. Longhorns force another third down, and Harris eludes defenders to find another receiver for a first. Harris scrambles on the next play but UTSA recovers. Another long pass makes it first and goal for UTSA.

A penalty Moves UTSA back, then a failed trick play moves them back further. An incompletion makes it third and goal from the 12, and Harris finds a receiver in the end zone for a score. They will review, and it’s incomplete. UTSA hits a field goal. 24-20 Texas 3:25

Texas starts its next drive on the 25. The Longhorns get into a third down, but a pass falls incomplete and the Longhorns have to punt.

UTSA begins with under two minutes left in the third. Two quick passes get two first downs. Jahdae Barron intercepts a tipped Harris pass and brings it back for a score. 31-20 Texas 0:18 Q4

UTSA’s next drive begins with a short run as the quarter ends.

Fourth quarter

Harris begins the quarter throwing on the run for a first down. UTSA gets into a third and long, and DeMarvion Overshown sacks Harris, but is called for targeting and ejected. A quick run puts UTSA into Longhorn territory.

On a third down, UTSA is stopped short. UTSA takes a timeout prior to the fourth and short play. A quick pass is dropped and Texas takes over.

Texas’ first play is undone by penalty, and the following play is a short loss. Card with a HUGE run for a first down. Robinson runs for nine. Then he runs for 41 for a score. 38-20 Texas 9:36

Frank Harris does not return to the game for some reason. Eddie Lee Marburger takes the field, and fumbles after a massive hit from Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey. The next play is a penalty and UTSA has to punt.

Texas takes over and runs tough into UTSA territory. A long Johnson run gets Texas inside the 10. Texas gets to fourth down and Auburn hits a field goal to make it 41-20 Texas 4:59.

UTSA gains a couple of first downs on their next drive, but a lot of second-string players are in the game for the Longhorns. A penalty moves UTSA deep into Texas territory with over a minute left.

UTSA takes a timeout with 0:22 left, and their fourth down attempt comes up short. Texas kneels and wins, 41-20.
