Texas defeated Kansas last season in Lawrence, Kan. by a score of 55-14. Bijan Robinson rushed 25 times for 243 yards and four touchdowns, while Jonathon Brooks added 11 carries for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

The Jayhawks are 4-0 for the second straight year. Kansas started 5-0 last year before dropping seven of its last eight. This year, Kansas has defeated Missouri State, Illinois, Nevada, and BYU.

Updates from Steve Sarkisian

Steve Sarkisian: “I was really proud of our guys in a couple of areas. One was our ability to play complementary football. We get a stop, we get a big punt return, two plays later — touchdown.”

Steve Sarkisian: “We’re one of the least penalized teams in the country right now. We’re playing really disciplined football. I love the fact that we’re, for the most part, taking care of the ball.”

Steve Sarkisian on Jalon Daniels: “He taxes you both ways. It’s not like you can have a guy be a scout team quarterback that’s a runner. You have to have the ability to throw it to give the defense a realistic about what they’re going to be up against.”

Steve Sarkisian says Jonathon Brooks has been the first guy on the field in the past couple of weeks and “he’s playing really good football for us.” Sarkisian said he was clocked at just under 22 mph.

Steve Sarkisian says there’s nothing to tweak on special teams: “There was nothing that happened in that game that we weren’t prepared for, but for some reason when we got into the game we had players not doing what we had exactly practiced Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for that matter.”

Steve Sarkisian on Lance Leipold: “I think what’s impressed me is they’re similar to us in some degree that they’re in year three. We have players in our program we inherited that stuck to and didn’t decide to go in the portal and become really good players for us. I think they’ve become really good players for them, too.” — “I think they’ve done a really good job of implementing their schemes on both sides of the ball.”

Steve Sarkisian mentioned the 5-7 season in the locker room at Baylor. Ahead of the game with Kansas, he’s going a different direction: “We don’t have to go backwards. We’ve got to keep forging forward and we’ve got a lot of goals that we’re trying to obtain and we’re trying to reach.”

Steve Sarkisian on Byron Murphy: “He’s built like a pitbull, man. He is strong. He’s got really strong shoulders. He’s extremely quick and powerful. He’s got a high football IQ, and he plays hard.”

Steve Sarkisian says Xavier Worthy has “extremely high” confidence as the punt returner: “This has been back to back weeks where he’s a shoelace tackle away from taking it the distance. I think he’s really committed to understanding the schemes that we’re running and how to set up some of the blocks and what’s happened there.”

Steve Sarkisian says Xavier Worthy is also blocking at an extremely high level on the perimeter. “I don’t think we could have said that about him his freshman or sophomore year.”

Steve Sarkisian on the safety rotation: “(Jalen) Catalon is not on a pitch count. We rotate our guys. I think we’re five-deep at that position. We’re extremely fortunate. I think that not only serves us well short term, in-game. I think it serves us well long term throughout a grueling season.”

Steve Sarkisian Vernon Broughton arguably had his best game for his staff on Saturday.

Steve Sarkisian: “We try to be a versatile football team. Not just on offense, we try to do as many things as we can really well.” — “We’re not one dimensional, and we’re going to have the ability this season to win games in a variety of ways.” — “We’re trying to be as versatile so that when people try to prepare for us, they have to pick their poison.”

Steve Sarkisian: “This game has got our undivided attention.”

Steve Sarkisian: “In a weird way, I’m kind of glad it happened because it exposed some warts in our program that needed to get removed. If we hadn’t removed those warts, we might not be where we are today in our program. Not all storms come to cause issues in your life. Some storms come to clear the path, and I feel like that storm cleared a path for us on what we needed to do in our program to move forward.”
