To tie the game, ASU had to go for two and their first try was unsuccessful, but a holding on Malik Muhammad gave ASU another chance. They took advantage, tying the game on a Skattebo run with 5:00 left.

Ewers had an up and down drive, but made a critical throw to Matthew Golden on 3rd and 10 to put the Longhorns in a goal to go situation. After a couple of mishaps, Ewers finally makes the play and gets up as excited as he’s been in a football game in some time. Texas 24, Arizona State 8 with 10:17 left.

A fake punt kept Texas’ defense on the field and some solid plays by the Sun Devils moved the ball into the high red zone as the half was coming to an end. The Sun Devils could not punch it in, and Ethan Burke blocked the ensuing field goal attempt to end the half with only 3 points. 17-3 Texas at the half.
Texas’ offense can’t do anything with decent field position

Quinn Ewers tried to scramble and picked up a few yards but he was brought down by Keyshaun Elliott short of the needed line to gain. Michael Kern’s punt travels through the end zone for a touchback.

But Michael Taaffe makes a stop on 3rd and 10 and in a move that appears desperate, Arizona State goes for it on 4th and 10. Leavitt is sacked by Trey Moore and Texas takes over with 5:09 left in the quarter on its own 38.

A pass interference on Arizona State moves Texas further down the field. The Longhorns end up facing a 4th and 7 that brings Bert Auburn onto the field, but an offside on Arizona State makes it 4th and 2. Steve Sarkisian elects to go for it, the offense converts, and the Texas drive continues. Then a few plays later, Anthony Hill commits a 15-yard facemask penalty to put ASU into scoring position. The drive stalls out but not before the Sun Devils naila 40-yard field goal to make it 3-0 ASU with 8:59 left in the first quarter.
