FINAL: Texas beats Texas A&M, 94-89, in 2OT at the SEC Tournament

The Texas Longhorns (18-14) are set to battle the Texas A&M Aggies (22-9) in Nashville in the second round of the SEC Tournament.

The Longhorns need to win to bolster their NCAA Tournament chances as Texas was considered the first team out in a number of projections. The Aggies are fighting to improve their seeding, with most projections labeling A&M a No. 3 seed.

Tip off is scheduled to take place 25 minutes after the end of Arkansas vs. Ole Miss. The winner faces Tennessee. SEC Network will air the game.

Pharrell Payne goes to the free throw line with 43.8 left and goes 1-for-2. Julian Larry is then fouled and goes to the line and goes 1-for-2. A&M uses a timeout, his last one, with 30.2 left. Jace Carter makes a three, then Kadin Shedrick heads to the line. Shedrick goes 2-for-2 to go 10-for-10 on the night. Wade Taylor IV misses a three and Jordan Pope heads to the line with a chance to ice it. He hits both and that’s it. 94-89 Texas 2OT.

Texas tries to survive without Tramon Mark in double overtime

With Mark gone, Taylor IV hits both free throws to take an 84-83 lead with 2:29 left. Tre Johnson then hits one from the logo to make it 87-85. A&M gets another second-chance opportunity, then a third-chance opportunity, but misses a three and Texas gets the board. Jordan Pope hits a jumper to make it a four-point game. A&M takes a timeout with 57.3 left. 89-85 Texas.

Into double overtime

Texas wins the tip in the first double OT game in the SEC Tournament since 2014. Johnson hits a stepback jumper to make it 81-79. A&M makes a layup to tie it and then Taylor goes 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Tramon Mark responds with a free throw on the other end, and Taylor IV tries to respond with a deep three but can’t. 84-83 Texas. Tramon Mark fouls out with 2:29 left.

Texas trails 78-77 with 36.6 left

Tre Johnson tries to get a wild jumper on the low left block off but it misses the mark. Pharrell Payne goes to the line with two shots and makes one with 19.7 left. Mark finds Shedrick for a dunk to tie it at 79 and the clock expires. Double overtime 79-70.

A couple of turnovers are traded and Texas gets the ball with 1:20 left. Jordan Pope hits a three-pointer with 1:04 left to make it 78-77. Mark then defends without fouling against the Aggie ball handler and plays great defense to force a turnover. Texas calls its final timeout with 36.6 left and down 78-77

In the first two seconds, Tre Johnson commits a foul and Manny Obaseki hits both free throws at the line. A driving effort from Mark is left unconverted but it’s not punished on the other end. Then, Pope misses a good look at the elbow that goes in and out. Again, A&M has another empty possession. An open Shedrick three happens but the attempt misses. A&M gets a second chance on the ensuing possession thanks to its 15th offensive board and hits a three thanks to Obaseki. Mark heads to the other end and goes 1-for-2 at the line to make it 78-74 with 2:15 left.

Overtime upcoming as Texas’ last shot effort misses

A back and forth battle comes down to the final possession of regulation, and Texas has the ball. With 25.9 seconds left, Texas puts the ball in Mark’s hands to start. The action starts with 11 seconds, but fails to do anything. Mark took a shot but it goes off the iron and the game goes to overtime. 73-73

It’s a close one… again. The Longhorns and Aggies are in a tight battle and each possession could determine the Longhorns’ season. Chendall Weaver, Tramon Mark, and Jordan Pope all have four fouls. So do Manny Obaseki and Soloman Washington for Texas A&M. Texas is one for its last seven from the field. 67-66 Texas 2:53 2H

Texas A&M is forced to take a timeout after the Longhorns build a nine point lead. A great stretch at the line from Kadin Shedrick followed by a made three from Tramon Mark has Texas up by nine. Texas again has hit five of its last seven field goals as part of a 7-0 run. 62-53 Texas 8:11 2H

Texas goes on a 10-2 run with scores from Tramon Mark, Devon Pryor, and Arthur Kaluma and holds A&M to just two free throws over that time period. Texas is cutting to the basket and making plays at the rim, and is effectively rebounding on defense. Texas is 5-for-17 to start and each one of those five save for one of Johnson’s made threes has been physically earned. Meanwhile, Texas A&M is 4-for-12 and 2-for-5 from distance, with the makes on some easy opportunities. Longhorns still haven’t attempted a field goal, but can be pleased they lead the rebounding battle 12-10 at the current juncture. 12-11 Texas A&M 11:45 1H.
