ARLINGTON – The No. 5 Texas Longhorns. The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes. Two blue-blood programs are set to battle in AT&T Stadium at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic for the right to play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the national championship.

Texas almost intercepts Howard via a tipped pass by Colin Simmons and then on third down, Howard is taken down in the backfield by Barryn Sorrell and Anthony Hill. Ohio State lets the clock drip down to the two-minute timeout

Quintrevion Wisner picks up some tough yards as does Isaiah Bond, but Quinn Ewers overthrows DeAndre Moore on a deep post and then Bond drops a pass over the middle that would have picked up the first down. Michael Kern is forced to take the field again and punt it to Ohio State, who starts on its own 27.

Another holding penalty, forced by Colton Vasek, then a false start backs up the Buckeyes. OSU completes a 15-yard pass on 3rd and 18 but they still fall short of the line to gain. Texas fair catches the punt on the -15 with 5:22 left in the half.

Texas picks up one first down to move out from under its own goalpost but that’s all they can manage. However, Ohio State may have suffered a major loss as JT Tuimoloau had to limp back to the injury tent nursing his his ankle. Michal Kern punts and Ohio State takes over on the 35.

A holding penalty on the Buckeyes on a screen play sets OSU back, and Howard almost makes up for it with an excellent third down throw. It goes off his receivers hands as the ESPN telecast shows a massive welt on his left, non-throwing hand. Ohio State punts and the ball is downed on the nine.

Texas goes three-and-out and barely avoids disaster

The Longhorns go three-and-out on their ensuing drive, and barely avoid losing the football when Ewers is sacked. Luckily, DJ Campbell jumps on the football. While this is happening, Matthew Golden heads to the locker room. Michael Kern punts 51 yards and Ohio State takes over on its own 34.

The Longhorns allow a couple of first downs but a stuff by Colin Simmons followed by a personal foul on Ohio State puts the Buckeyes well behind the chains. A TFL of Will Howard then a short third down gain gives the ball back to Texas after Bolden returns the punt to the 25.

Sacks stall out the Longhorns’ second drive

Ohio State is able to sack Quinn Ewers twice, including on a 3rd and and 12 on the OSU 44, to end another Texas drive without the Longhorns reaching the red zone. Ryan Wingo caught a screen pass and gained 22 yards and would have been in the end zone if not for a touchdown-saving tackle by Caleb Downs. Michael Kern punts and Ohio State takes over on its own eight.

Ohio State records three passes of 10-or-more yards and moves quickly from its own 36 to the Texas nine in a goal-to-go situation. A dropped touchdown pass on first down doesn’t derail Ohio State’s efforts, as Quinshon Judkins rushes for a touchdown from nine yards out to cap a 10-play, 64-yard drive that featured two third-down conversions. Ohio State 7, Texas 0 7:24 Q1.

Texas’ first drive ends in a turnover on downs

The Longhorns first first down of the game comes via a one-handed catch by Matthew Golden that puts the Longhorns into Buckeye territory. A long rush by Ryan Wingo puts Texas inside the Ohio State 40, but the drive stalls and a 4th and 3 pass attempt intended for DeAndre Moore Jr that was not catchable falls incomplete. The Buckeyes take over on their own 36 at the 11:42 mark.
