HELOTES, Tx -- It's no secret the State of Texas is loaded with offensive line prospects in 2020. Logan Parr is one reason.
The 6-foot-3.5, 278-pound OL from San Antonio O'Connor committed to Texas tonight. He chose the Longhorns over competing offers from Arkansas, Michigan, Oklahoma, TCU, and Vanderbilt among others.
Eric Nahlin on Parr: The quarterback/center snap exchange looks to be in safe hands for the long haul as Texas lands Logan Parr to pair with its other commitment in the class, Lake Travis signal caller Hudson Card.
Though he plays left tackle in high school, at 6-foot-3.5 and 278 pounds, Parr projects best to center on the next level. There, his intelligence, quickness, awareness to find work when not covered up, and willingness to finish blocks will come in handy. He also shows a nice kick step in pass protection, indicating the quicker defensive tackles in the league will have their work cut out for them when trying to defeat him in pass protection. He has a good, powerful build for the position that will only become more powerful to enable him to anchor or drive block. He's a natural mover that suggests ability on the second level and out in space.
Mental evaluation is a big piece of the center puzzle. There is a lot to process in a short period of time at the position. While being tasked with making line calls, you also have to be aware of the snap count as well as getting the ball to the quarterback. Once the ball snaps, your technique and footwork has to be on point. It's a demanding position.
Ideally Texas would have found a center to groom in the 2019 class, but with Herman's "championship standard" for recruits he didn't want to force any offers. Instead, they'll find a player or players to bridge from Zach Shackelford to Parr. I don't foresee a very long learning curve for him. A red-shirt season will likely be enough time to develop.
The 2020 offensive line class is going to be heavy on numbers and highly rated. Parr is the first of many on board, and he'll look to anchor the o-line class just like he'll anchor the o-line on the field.
