Steve Sarkisian, Bo Davis, and Jeff Banks dipped into one of the strongest high school football programs in the country and landed a legacy prospect at a position of massive need. Texas earned a commitment on Saturday from 2024 Duncanville (Texas) defensive lineman Alex January, the son of former Longhorn Michael January.

January chose the Longhorns over Florida State, LSU, Oklahoma, and Miami.

January is ranked as the No. 410 overall prospect, the No. 36 defensive lineman, and the No. 68 prospect in Texas according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a proprietary algorithm that compiles ratings and rankings from all four primary recruiting media services. On3 ranks January as the No. 217 overall prospect, the No. 21 defensive lineman, and the No. 44 player in Texas.

Excerpt from the Recruiting Notebook

Texas likes to use bigger, two-gapping tackles at either position up front and January is another who fits the bill. He played some two-gapping 3-technique at Duncanville as well as some nose tackle. His combination of length and size was way too much for even good high school offensive lines and he had a good time shedding blocks and shoving gaps closed. He could play either interior position and is a future two-gapper wherever he ends up who uses his length and strength in run defense to anchor the interior. As a pass-rusher he’ll need time to hone some techniques but he has some tools which could be put to work to collapse the pocket. – Ian Boyd

Coach says:

Strengths: Excellent height and frame for the interior DL with width through the hips. Athletic in his stance and able to take a low angle of attack. He is quick off the snap, primarily from the 3-technique and holds/owns his gap really well. Rarely if ever gets moved backward and generates a fair amount of stun power on contact. Keeps pads square to the line pretty regularly. Shows really good upper body strength. Plays head up and holds his gap. Diagnoses the play pretty quickly and is able to disengage effectively using very good push-pull technique. Straight line speed is about average. Longhorn legacy.

Areas for Improvement / Concerns: Pass rush moves not evident on film and his use of hands needs coaching. Would like to see the hands more active and violent. Lets his pad level get too high pretty regularly. Opponent film shows him getting leveraged/off-balance as a result.
