Texas is entering its bye week, as are the Oklahoma Sooners, Baylor Bears, and Central Florida Knights. The rest of the Big 12 begins the middle third of conference play this weekend, starting Thursday night with West Virginia at Houston in a matchup between Dana Holgorsen’s old school and his current one.

It’s early enough to where Texas doesn’t exactly need specific teams to start losing, but it’s always worth keeping an eye on the events of the league.

West Virginia at Houston

October 12, 6 p.m., FS1

Neal Brown’s Mountaineers are the surprise team of the conference this year, sitting in second place in the Big 12 with a 4-1 overall record. Houston is no surprise after an offseason that saw most of the talent depart the Third Ward for the NFL or the transfer portal. A WVU win would tie the Mountaineers with OU atop the Big 12 standings.

Iowa State at Cincinnati

October 14, 11 a.m., FS1

Offense doesn’t come easy for either of these two teams. Cincinnati is coming off its bye week, while Iowa State is looking to make it two in a row after topping TCU in Ames last Saturday. Rocco Becht versus Emory Jones, anyone?

BYU at TCU

October 14, 2:30 p.m., ESPN

The Horned Frogs will be without Chandler Morris after he suffered another injury. Sonny Dykes and company will turn to Josh Hoover when the Cougars head to Amon G. Carter Stadium. A loss by TCU would all but eliminate them from conference title contention.

Kansas at Oklahoma State

October 14, 2:30 p.m., FS1

“Will Jalon Daniels play?” has become a weekly question. On Tuesday, ESPN’s answer to it was “it’s doubtful.” Jason Bean will likely lead an option-centric offense into Stillwater, Okla. versus a Cowboys team that took advantage of three K-State turnovers to win last Friday. A win for either team will go a long way in determining who becomes a contender in the conference as the season carries on.

Kansas State at Texas Tech

October 14, 6:00 p.m., FS1

Those three turnovers? They were interceptions thrown by Will Howard. He’ll look to bounce back in a night game in Lubbock, which means something crazy is bound to happen. Texas Tech’s non-conference losses aside, a win here could put them in the middle of the Big 12 race.
