Marcus Carr named Big 12 player of the week

Marcus Carr is the heartbeat of the seventh-ranked Texas men’s basketball team and parlayed one of his best weeks as a member of the Longhorns into his first ever Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors, the league announced on Monday afternoon.

Carr averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in the Longhorns’ wins against Rice at home in overtime on Dec. 12 and over Stanford in Dallas on Sunday. Carr hit 51.7 percent of his field goals (making 15 of his 29 shots), was 9 of 12 from beyond the arc and amassed a 2-to-1 assist to turnover ratio over the two games.
Carr’s season-best 28 points in the overtime win over Rice was capped by eight of Texas’ points in the extra period. He also racked a season-high in field goals made (9), 3-pointers made (4) and minutes played (42) in the victory.
Carr also paced the Longhorns (9-1) against Stanford on Sunday, pouring in a team-high 17 points and dishing out five assists while committing just one turnover. Fifteen of his points in the game came after halftime. He scored 10 of the Longhorns’ final 16 points to close out a double-digit win over the Cardinal.
Through Texas’ first 10 games, Carr leads the team in points per game (15.6), total assists (43), steals (19) and minutes per game (30.1). He has a 3.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio and has made 20 of his 56 three-point attempts.

The Longhorns return to the court on Wednesday for a dustup with Louisiana at the Moody Center. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. CST and the game will be televised nationally by the Longhorn Network.
