Marcus Carr named to Naismith Trophy Midseason Team
Texas guard Marcus Carr has been named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Men’s Player of the Year Midseason Team, as announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club on Thursday. The Naismith Trophy is annually awarded to the nation’s top men’s and women’s college basketball players.

Carr, who leads the Longhorns in scoring (17.0 ppg), assists (95), steals (39) and minutes (32.4 mpg), is one of 30 finalists for the men’s award. He is the only Texas player on the roster.
In a recent roundtable of Inside Texas basketball writers, all three named Carr as the team’s most valuable player this season.
“The exciting part is that Carr has proven that his production is repeatable,” said Inside Texas’ Tim Preston. “If you had told me prior to this season that the Horns would only go as far as Carr could lead them, I would have been pretty nervous about that. Now, it brings me some comfort.”
Here’s the link to the basketball roundtable:
Carr has produced a 2.26 assist-to-turnover ratio (95-42) and has hit 43.3 percent (140-309) from the floor, including a 38.6 percent (56-145) mark from beyond the arc. Carr has made 71 of 87 free throw attempts (81.6 percent) and has scored 20 or more points five times in Big 12 play.
Carr had scored at least 27 points four times this season, including a 29-point effort in Texas’ most recent game, an 88-80 loss at No. 8 Kansas.
His 41-point performance on Dec. 27 against Texas A&M-Commerce marked the first 40-point performance by a Texas player since Reggie Freeman scored 43 in a home win against Fresno State on Dec. 14, 1996. In that game Carr tied the school record for most 3-point field goals made and for most points scored in a half with 33 in the first half.

“Carr isn’t just the leading scorer… he’s the offense’s catalyst and closer,” Inside Texas’ Joe Cook said. “Without Carr, (Texas) is an entirely different team.”
Carr is the only active NCAA Division I player to rack up at least 2,100 points (2,154), 600 assists (689), and 500 rebounds (504).
Carr has been honored twice this season as the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week (on Dec. 19 and Jan. 2, respectively). He has also been named to the John R. Wooden Award midseason top 25 watch list and the Oscar Robertson Trophy midseason top 50 watch list.
Six other Big 12 players are also finalists for the Naismith Trophy: Keyonte George and Adam Flagler from Baylor; Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell from Kansas State; Mike Miles Jr. from TCU; and Jalen Wilson from Kansas.
