Here’s what he brings to Texas.

10.2 pts, 5.4 reb, 0.8 blk; 68% FG, 64% FT

At 7-foot, 245 pounds, Florida Atlantic transfer center Matas Vokietaitis is a play-finishing big with solid mobility for his size. Through a mix of cuts, post-ups, and pick-and-roll sets, Vokietaitis managed extremely efficient scoring throughout his freshman campaign, ranking in the 97th percentile in points per shot at 1.31, as well as finishing with a 66% true shooting mark.

He was the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year last season playing in the paint, and is one of the most sought-after players in the entire portal for his potential as a rim runner and defensive asset. A pure dunker-spot center that lacks perimeter skills of any kind, Vokietaitis takes 94% of his shots at the rim and attempted exactly one three this past season.

Texas will likely use him in a Zach Freemantle role, where they will take advantage of Vokietaitis’ experience with posting up (20% of possessions at FAU). Though Vokietaitis has no playmaking ability at this point, his lob-threat capabilities, spatial awareness as the roll man, and efficiency on post-up opportunities makes him a player that may be more capable on offense than his 10.2 points per game suggest.

Additionally, on the defensive end, he has room to grow as a shot-blocker and rim protector, though his size in itself is a deterrent. He can serve as the five-man for any rotation, with the upside of likely being a starter off of the bat. His catch radius on alley-oops also gives point guards an easier time on the drive when looking to dish, especially when playing against drop coverage.

In general, Vokietaitis fits the many needs they have for a defensive-minded post player that can also score efficiently on the other side. His ability to easily move around laterally means that while he isn’t switchable, he can occasionally guard forwards that step out of the pain. With Dailyn Swain on the perimeter, Vokietaitis can be a major piece of this Longhorns defense next season.
