He joins the company of Pete Maravich, Antoine Davis, Freeman Williams, Chris Clemons, Lionel Simmons, Alphonso Ford, Doug McDermott, Mike Daum, Harry Kelly, Keydren Clark, and Hersey Hawkins.
Abmas, a graduate transfer from Oral Roberts who is using the year of eligibility relief provided by the NCAA as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to play a fifth season, scored 2561 career points at ORU. He tallied 447 points in 31 games in 2019-20, 686 in 28 games in 2020-21, 685 in 30 games in 2021-22, and 743 points across 34 games in 2022-23.
Entering Monday’s contest, Abmas had scored 432 points in 25 games at Texas. He is the Longhorns’ leading scorer, averaging 17.3 points per contest on 43 percent shooting. He has a 38.4 percent three-point shooting percentage and a 90-percent mark from the free throw line for Texas.
In his career, Abmas is a 44 percent shooter from the field and 39 percent from three. He also has shot 89 percent from the charity stripe for his career.
Abmas becomes the second five-year player to eclipse the 3000-point mark. Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis finished three points behind Pistol Pete’s career mark in 2023, ending his career with 3664 points. Every other member of the 3000-point club achieved the feat across a four-year career.
The path to 3000 points has seen Abmas pass legends of college basketball on the all-time list. Names like Oscar Robertson, Danny Manning, Elvin Hayes, Tyler Hansbrough, Larry Bird, JJ Reddick, and Hank Gathers are now behind Abmas on the career scoring list.
A product of Dallas Jesuit, Abmas arrived at Texas after twice being named the Summit League player of the year and the Summit League tournament MVP. With Abmas, the Golden Eagles became the ninth 15-seed to defeat a two-seed in the NCAA Tournament in 2021 when ORU topped Ohio State. Abmas scored 29 points against the Buckeyes, then followed it up in the second round with a 26-point performance versus Florida to advance Oral Roberts to the Sweet 16. They fell two points short of the Elite Eight in a two-point loss to Arkansas.

As a Longhorn, Abmas has scored in double figures in all but his most recent outing against Houston. His season high is 32 points in a loss to West Virginia on January 13. He’s topped 20 points eight times this year.
Abmas will likely pass Hawkins in short order, and could move up as far as eighth on the all-time list in the regular season.
