With the NCAA transfer portal officially opening on Monday, June 2, college baseball players have one full month to enter their names into the system and eventually find their new homes. With Texas baseball’s season ending on the 1st of the month, players have been entering the portal at a faster rate than fans might have hoped for, given the early exit in Texas’ own regional.

While Texas will be monitoring many of the top names entering the portal and has a substantial budget to play with, some attrition from its core of players was expected.

The first name to enter this portal cycle was Matthew Scott II, a freshman outfielder who saw just three at-bats in five games of action for the Longhorns. Scott was ranked as the No. 4 outfielder in Texas, according to Perfect Game, and was expected to be a long-term power option in the corner outfield spots. When Max Belyeu went down with an injury, it was expected that Scott would get some playing time, but the emergence of Jonah Williams continued to bury him in the lineup. Scott will have three years of eligibility remaining.

The biggest name to enter the portal so far this cycle is LHP/OF Ace “Boogie” Whitehead. Whitehead has been a fan favorite in his four seasons in Austin, originally garnering fame for his star quarterback play at Lampasas High School. Whitehead played both sides for the Longhorns in his first three seasons but broke out in his junior year as one of Texas’ few reliable pitchers.

In 2024, Whitehead tossed 67 innings, mostly as a starter, with a 4.16 ERA, often throwing extended innings in appearances like his six-inning, zero-earned-run win over TCU. Whitehead suffered from Thoracic Outlet Syndrome to end the season, and surgery in the offseason left him sidelined for all of 2025. With NCAA rules allowing him to take a redshirt season, Whitehead will have his final year of eligibility in the upcoming season.

Schlossnagle will also have to contend with the losses of three other players from the 2024–25 recruiting class. OF Donovan Jordan, 3B/OF Sam Richardson, and LHP Chance Covert have all decided to enter the portal and seek opportunities at other programs. Richardson was the most notable of this group, having been the highest-rated player in Texas’ class and choosing the Longhorns over the MLB. Richardson was a top-40 player and the No. 3 overall third baseman in the country entering the season, expected to be an instant contributor with fantastic power entering college.

Still, Richardson saw no game action, along with Jordan, and the duo of right-handed bats will not be in Austin next season. Covert, a 6’2″ lefty from Westlake, couldn’t find playing time with the emergence of newcomers like Dylan Volantis and Grayson Saunier. All four players will have four years of eligibility after redshirting in 2025.

Though losing players with the potential to be building blocks for the future is never ideal, it’s a good sign that Texas has not lost any of its top contributors from this past season. Many of the players in the most recent draft class were originally recruited by David Pierce, so a difference in philosophy with Schlossnagle at the helm may be the reason they’ve decided to look elsewhere for their college careers.
