Back in July, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke about his team’s mentality just before the first practice of the 2023 season. One of the things he touched on eventually became a theme for the eventual Big 12 champions: the John Wick mentality.

“I think this team is on a mission,” Sarkisian said. “They’ve taken this mindset of being on a mission. They’ve adopted the John Wick mentality that Quinn (Ewers) has touched on and Jordan (Whittington) has touched on. They’ve really focused, and I think that’s probably the thing. They want to go do this. They want to be focused on the task at hand.”

Wick is the main character of a four-part movie series named after him. A number of other assassins constantly set out to kill Wick, but Wick always had the last laugh. Though regularly hunted, he becomes the hunter during the course of the four-movie franchise.

That’s a mentality Texas brought into the 2023 season, and one they had emblazoned on T-shirts as part of a constant reminder to be the aggressor and embrace the hate from other teams and fanbases. That lead to the Longhorns winning the Big 12 Championship during their final season as members of the league.

The ability to touch championship hardware was something that left an imprint on Sarkisian after a campaign emphasizing the John Wick mentality.

“I came here to win a championship,” Sarkisian said in early February. “If I can get one, then I want to get two. I’m borderline obsessed with it at this point. I know what it tasted like last year. I know how close we were, and I couldn’t wait to get back. Hopefully, that’s what our team starts to exude, this obsession with being the best because we have a locker room full of young men that are driven, that are focused, that want to be the best.”

“Obsessed” has now seemingly become the program’s latest tagline. It’s something Sarkisian himself posts about on social media…

And something that’s always in front of the current team in the form of the offseason workout attire.

The notion of a John Wick mentality became public ahead of camp for the 2023 season.

Texas and the idea (and tagline) of being “OBSESSED” has arrived much earlier in an effort for the Longhorn football program to share the same obsession with championships with the head coach.
