Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel was filmed back in jersey and throwing the ball yesterday at a Sooners’ practice.

While Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said the transfer quarterback remained in the concussion protocol, it’s quite clear the Sooners are hoping Gabriel will play this weekend against the Horns.

If Gabriel is able to play, it definitely makes the Sooners more dangerous than otherwise because their backup did not look like much of a threat against TCU.

Jeff Lebby, the Sooners’ offensive coordinator, is sure to have some surprises in store for Pete Kwiatkowski’s defense.

But it’s not the Sooners’ offense that has Oklahoma fans concerned. It’s Venables’ defense.

The Sooners currently rank No. 109 in the country in total defense compared to No. 18 in total offense.

Texas ranks Nos. 61 and 63 on offense and defense, respectively.

Of course, those are not advanced stats or even scoring focused ones (the Sooners and Longhorns both rank significantly higher in points-for and points-against categories), just based on total yardage. Still, they are indicators of both teams’ strengths.

Texas has not been overwhelming on offense or defense this season, but they’ve been relatively good at both.

The Sooners, meanwhile, have flashed some on offense but have had true issues on defense, some that are eerily reminiscent to what the Horns put on the field a year ago.
