Both men think Texas has set the table to be very good in 2023.

“We think that Texas has a chance, or should be a favorite, if not the favorite, to win the Big 12,” Burton said. “Well, it’s probably not the last time or the first time we said that in the last 10 years. So I’m going to put this question to Paul…are we drinking too much Kool-Aid at this time?”

Wadlington said there is plenty to like from what Texas has shown so far.

“We like all the trends, and we like the bigger picture stuff,” he said. “We like how the team looks, we like the athleticism, we like the versatility and multiple positions as well as the obvious depth improvement.”

“So Bobby if you have loved and lost many times, can you love again? Can you get back in? Texas fans are a strange, psychotic fan base and we’re very passionate about Texas, but we’re also very critical. And we’re also self-doubting because we’ve had Lucy pull the football away from Charlie Brown so many times over the last decade plus.

“Can we love again?” Wadlington continued. “Yes, I choose to love Bobby. I choose to wade in and predict that Texas is going to be good this year.”

Burton remarks that he expects the Texas defense to be better this year than last year.

“One thing travels in college football, and that’s your defense,” Burton explains. “Texas had a good year on defense last year and it looks to me that they’re going to be better this year.

“Will it be the best defense ever? Texas had some stout defenses in its history, but it’s gonna be a really good defense. It’s got guys on the on the first level and the second level in the backend. I don’t know what else (you would want). I mean, maybe higher draft picks in those positions. I mean, experience and ability – they’ve got it.”

Burton said he’s usually fallen on the side of expecting less of the Longhorns and laments the fact that he’s usually been correct. But the improvement of the Texas defense

“I tend historically to not be a guy that drinks a lot of Kool-Aid – I’m actually the guy that picks Texas to win seven games or eight games as opposed to nine or 10 every year,” Burton said. “I’ve been that way for a while now – 10-plus years, and I have a been right more often than I’ve been wrong in that regard unfortunately.

“The reason I’m not as concerned about that prognostication this year is strictly because of the defense, based on what I saw, not only from a talent level, but a production standpoint.” Burton added.

Both Burton and Wadlington also have concerns about specific aspects of the Longhorns but you’ll have to check out the video to hear those.
