Nahlin remarked that the biggest early impression for the new arrivals is how they conduct themselves in the weight room and through conditioning drills.

“They’re not doing the full complement of workouts, but they are moving around and in the weight room enough to where we know that they’re showing up with the right size and the right work ethic,” said Nahlin, InsideTexas.com’s publisher. “They are doing some running drills – they look very athletic.

“A lot of things we look for when the new guys arrive is ‘how big is the place?’ Do they look around and are they starstruck or do they just put their head down and work. And are they are they carrying over that confidence they have when they’re at the high school level to the college level?”

Nahlin said that the players show that they have the raw materials but how that translates to the field when the lights are on remains to be seen.

“You know, we don’t know what any of these guys are gonna look like when the pads come on,” he said. “So this is just kind of Underwear Olympics, sort of thing. But yeah, they’re passing the early tests, for sure.”

Burton and Nahlin discussed Trill Carter, who is new on campus after playing two years at Minnesota. Carter, a portal transfer, was among the players Texas coach Steve Sarkisian brought to a Texas One Fund meet-and-greet with donors. Quinn Ewers and Jordan Whittington were also at the fundraiser.

“We haven’t talked much about Carter of late but he actually is a new arrival even though he committed a couple of months ago,” Burton said.

“Sark brought these high-profile guys and the fact that they brought in Trill tells you a lot,” Nahlin said. “Sark’s not going to bring that guy in to talk to all these donors if he doesn’t feel like he’s going to live up to the moment. It’s a little intimidating for some of those college guys to talk to these 75-year old dudes you know. It’s hard enough for me. Carter was quite engaging and fun to talk to you. I think it was a great way to introduce him to a lot of the to the fan base.
