Both Burton and Nahlin came away impressed by the prowess of quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning in the drills that the media was allowed to watch on Wednesday.
“I thought Quinn looked really good,” Nahlin said. “We were standing pretty close to each other when he let loose a couple of those out routes that really caught our attention – kind of looked like NFL draft and the pro day we’ll see on Thursday, or a lot of schools will have that in the coming days.
“The ball just jumped out of his hand and he hit the target right on the money and he looked good handling the ball.”
Nahlin came away impressed with the overall talent of the Texas players.
“I said that this was the year that they would start to win and play in the ways that remind us of the old days, and nothing I saw practice would really dissuade me from that opinion,” Nahlin explained. “That doesn’t mean it’s a perfect roster yet. They still have a long way to go. As you said earlier this morning, they’ve got the pieces, they just need time.”

Burton agreed that Texas is strong in the quarterback room.
“We were talking this morning after practice just how good they are at quarterback, but they’re not refined yet,” Burton said. “Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning have a world of talent. They’re both future NFL guys as long as you know, knock on wood, they stay relatively healthy. At some point those two guys are going to be able to take this team to places…you know quarterback is the most important position on the team.”
Nahlin agreed, saying “the duo is the type of player that you think you’ll be telling people that you saw, you know, 15 years from now or 20 years from now.”
Burton mentioned that the Texas men’s basketball team heads to the Big 12 Championship on a bit of a high and that interim coach Rodney Terry is likely coaching for his job even though on Wednesday he was named the men’s College Basketball National Coach of the Year by the Sporting News.
“Terry is coaching for his job – maybe not in this tournament, but in the next one, which the NCAA tournament,” Burton opined. “Texas looks like it will be a two seed (in the NCAAs). I’m hearing a prevailing thought that if Rodney Terry gets the team to the Sweet 16, he may be the Texas basketball coach next year as well.”
