The 6-foot-1, 165-pounder and two-time Summit Conference player of the year committed to Texas on Thursday, choosing the Longhorns over Kansas State. Abmas has scored 2561 points in his four-year career and has averaged over 20 points per game in the last three seasons.

The 2023-24 season will be his extra season of eligibility afforded by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abmas, who attended Dallas Jesuit, became a recognized name in college basketball during the Golden Eagles’ 2021 run to the Sweet 16. As a No. 15 seed, ORU defeated No. 2 seed Ohio State and No. 7 seed Florida before falling to No. 3 seed Arkansas, 72-70. Abmas scored 29 points versus the Buckeyes, 26 points versus the Gators, and 25 points versus the Razorbacks, playing all 125 minutes in the three contests.

In 123 career games, Abmas averaged 20.8 points on 43.7 percent shooting, including 38.8 percent from three. He is also a career 88.3 percent free throw shooter, and earned All-Summit honors three times.

Abmas is a sorely needed arrival for new Texas head coach Rodney Terry, who saw Marcus Carr exhaust his eligibility, Tyrese Hunter declare for the NBA draft while maintaining his eligibility, and Arterio Morris and Rowan Brumbaugh enter the transfer portal. Plus, five-star signee AJ Johnson elected to play professionally oversees instead of on the Forty Acres.

A volume shooter, Abmas averaged over 15.5 field goals per game and almost 10 three-point shots per contest. No Texas player averaged over 13 field goals per contest last year, with Carr setting the high mark at 12.8. Carr averaged 5.9 three-point field goals per game.

Abmas is the second portal addition for the Longhorns since the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, joining Kadin Shedrick.
