Ossai chooses Texas

In one of the more drawn out and important recruiting battles the state of Texas had for the class of 2018, Texas came out on top. In doing so, they addressed a position of great need.
Conroe Oak Ridge LB Joseph Ossai committed to Texas today. Texas A&M and Notre Dame were the Longhorns' main competition along with other offers from Alabama, Baylor, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

How does he fit at Texas: Ossai is a pretty pure 4-3 DE right now who spends his time flying into backfields and devastating opposing OL in 1-on-1s. Texas could get him a lot of opportunities to work the edge and stunt inside from their B-backer position, but they'd also have to ask him to split time and learn to play coverage drops and traditional LB run fits. He appears a great athlete who could figure all that out and excel in the position, it'd also prep him well for the NFL if he wanted to go that route, but right now he's flashing the tools and the frame to stay on the line with his hand in the dirt. - IB
Coach Says: This kid is impressive. For a guy that is about to be a senior he already has some impressive tools for an edge rusher. He can run the arc, he has a nice speed to power move, and he has the quickness to beat guys across their face at the snap. He’s not just a pass rusher either. He also shows the ability to anchor in the run game and not get driven off the ball and shows he has the ability to disengage from blocks. There’s already a lot to like and a lot to work with in his tool box and whoever signs him is getting a heck of a player.
How does this affect Texas: With Byron Hobbs and Ayodele Adeoye already in the fold, Texas would like one more linebacker in 2018's class. And Ossai might have the most upside. He'd fit the 3-4 defense Orlando runs perfectly, not to mention he's a smart, well-spoken young man. A&M has the advantage at the moment, but with Herman, you never know. This guy has proven he can get almost anyone the staff focuses on and they feel confident they'll have a shot with Ossai. The 4-star stud from Conroe wants to wait until NSD, but a decision could come sooner this fall. With the Sumlin era approaching it's likely end in College Station, Ossai will have a lot to think about in the next five months. - JW
