Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was named one of 57 nominees for the Broyles Award on Tuesday. The Broyles Award is given annually to college football’s top assistant coach. Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian won the Broyles Award for his exploits as the Alabama offensive coordinator in 2020.

Kwiatkowski, currently in his third year as the Texas defensive play-caller, has been a key part of the Longhorns’ year-over-year improvement on defense. The Horns were ranked No. 100 in total defense in 2021, allowing 425.6 yards per game. In 2022, Texas moved up to the No. 54 position and allowed 368.4 yards per game. In 2023, the Longhorns are No. 37 in total defense, allowing 337.1 yards per game.
Thanks to standout play from T’Vondre Sweat, Byron Murphy, Anthony Hill, Jaylan Ford, and Jahdae Barron, the Longhorns rank No. 8 in rush defense, No. 20 in scoring defense, and No. 2 in third-down conversion percentage defense. Only two teams, Oklahoma and Kansas State, have scored 30 or more points versus the Longhorns this season.

One Longhorn assistant has won the Broyles Award. Offensive coordinator Greg Davis took home the honor in 2005. Former Texas head coach Tom Herman was the 2014 winner of the Broyles Award prior to taking the job in Austin.
A selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists, five finalists from the list of nominees, and an overall winner.
