Odessa Permian senior ATH Peyton Powell committed to Texas today over competing offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and TCU among others. Originally from Midland Christian, Powell transferred to powerhouse Permian this summer to play quarterback for the Panthers. Even though he's got dual-threat talent, his best football likely lies on the other side of the ball. He'll get a shot at wide receiver, but nickel will probably be where he's most maximized. Powell took an official visit to Austin for the Baylor game on October 3rd after rescheduling two previous trips. In his eyes, it was well worth it. "I loved everything about it," Powell told IT last week. "Just really everything. The coaching staff, the stability, and the special things that are about to happen in Austin." The special things brewing in Austin, like culture, development, renovation, genuine relationship building is more evident than ever now. The winning only supports the mission statement. "It's easy to see," said Powell. [caption id="attachment_42298" align="alignright" width="300"]Powell and Lewis during their OV in Austin. Currently he's a solid option QB who's 6-foot-2, 180 or so, that runs a true 4.4 (40-yard dash) with a 37" vertical. With all that athleticism and that kind of frame he could be a surefire NFL CB if he takes well to defense or he could stay with offense and feast as a ultra-twitchy wideout. The smart play is to snatch him up and figure it out after he gets to campus. - Ian Boyd Powell becomes the 19th member of Texas’ 2019 class joining David Gbenda (Cinco Ranch), Tyler Owens (Plano East), Derrian Brown (Buford – GA), Javonne Shepherd (North Forest), Marcus Tillman (Jones – FL), DeMariyon Houston (Millwood – OK), Marques Caldwell (Alvin), Chris Adimora (Lakewood – CA), Peter Mpagi (George Ranch), Jake Smith (Notre Dame Prep – AZ), Jared Wiley (Temple), Tyler Johnson (Conroe Oak Ridge), Brayden Liebrock (Chandler – AZ), Kenyatta Watson II (Grayson – GA), De’Gabriel Floyd (Westlake – CA), Jordan Whittington (Cuero), T’Vondre Sweat (Huntsville), and Roschon Johnson (Port Neches-Groves).
