Texas has been a preseason top-five team 24 times in the history of the Associated Press poll, which started ranking teams prior to the beginning of campaigns in 1950. Odds are that total will increase to 25 on Monday when the AP releases the Preseason Top 25. But where exactly will Texas be in that list of power programs?

The Longhorns have never been the top-ranked team in the preseason, a trend likely to continue this year considering how college football media views Georgia and Ohio State in a tier all their own with Texas and Oregon right behind them.

Texas was the preseason No. 2 team in 1962, 1965, 1970, 2005, and 2009.

On four occasions has Texas been ranked No. 3 before toe met leather: 1971, 1973, 1983, and 2006.

The Longhorns started the year ranked No. 4 in 1954, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1967, 1969, 1979, 2002, and 2007.

The Horns checked in at No. 5 in the preseason poll in 1950, 1963, 1968, 2001, 2003, and 2010.

Where will Texas begin 2024?

Within the top five seems like a slam dunk. But the top three? If the Coaches Poll is any indication, it might be tough.

The Longhorns were ranked No. 4 in the preseason Coaches Poll behind No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 Ohio State, and No. 3 Oregon. Georgia corralled 46 first-place votes, Ohio State nabbed seven, and Texas had one coach label the Horns as the No. 1 team.

Michigan, No. 8, also received a first place vote.

That put the point totals that determine the order at 1364 for UGA, 1302 for OSU, 1228 for UO, and 1223 for UT.

The margin between No. 3 and No. 4 was slim. And it wouldn’t surprise if the margin was slim on Monday when the poll is released.

Prediction: Texas is the No. 4 team but, like in the Coaches Poll, the Longhorns garner more first-place votes than the Ducks.
