Rapid Recap: Shooting again the story as Texas tops Wyoming, 86-63
The No. 15 Texas Longhorns delivered their fifth 80-point effort out of the season’s six games in an 86-63 win over the Wyoming Cowboys, improving their 2023-24 record to 5-1. The Longhorns shot over 55 percent from the field for the fourth time this season with Max Abmas scoring 23 points, the most he’s produced in burnt orange in his young Texas career.

In addition to the 56-percent effort from the field, the Longhorns shot 40 percent from three-point land made up mostly by a 5-for-10 effort in the first half. Texas was also 12-for-13 from the line across all 40 minutes, good for 92 percent.
Wyoming trailed by as much as 25 during the game and though the Cowboys cut the 15-point halftime deficit to 12 at two different junctures in the second half, the Longhorn lead never shrunk to single-digits. An 11-0 run by Rodney Terry’s team between the 7:47 and 4:09 marks in the second half put the game totally out of reach for the Cowboys.
Kadin Shedrick, who was held out of the Longhorns’ last outing versus UConn, scored 17 points in 26 minutes. Tyrese Hunter and Dillon Mitchell each added 12 points, while Ithiel Horton scored 11 to round out the double-digit scorers.
Abmas delivered a performance reminiscent of his Oral Roberts days. To lead all scorers, he scored his 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting including a 3-for-6 effort from three. He also hit all four of his free throw attempts. The only miss at the charity stripe for the Longhorns came via Horton.
Hunter helped the Longhorn backcourt have a solid day, going 5-for-10 from the field. Shedrick added offense running the floor and in the back to the basket game with his 7-for-10 performance.
Texas took a 15-point lead into half thanks to Abmas hitting a circus three with under 10 seconds remaining. Abmas scored 13 points before the break on 4-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-5 from three. Shedrick matched Abmas’ number of first-half makes, going 4-for-6 with scores in multiple aspects.

Both teams struggled shooting early, with Texas starting 1-for-8 from the field. To enter halftime over the final 15:47, Texas was 13-for-20 from the field including a 5-for-8 finish from three.
Texas shot 61 percent in the second half, with 19-of-28 makes coming on shots of the two-point variety. Texas committed 14 turnovers and surrendered 36 points in the paint in Sunday’s game. However, Texas scored 42 points, just shy of half its total, in the lane. The Longhorns outrebounded the Cowboys 38-28.
The Longhorns utilized an eight-man rotation for most of the contest until Terry cycled in backups when the game was no longer in question.
Texas hosts Texas State on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Moody Center. Longhorn Network will televise the contest.
