Allstate became the title sponsor of the event on Monday and retuned the moniker “Rivalry” to the end of corporate name of the contest, abandoning “Showdown.”

“We are thrilled to have such an outstanding, longtime Texas Longhorns partner as Allstate come on board to sponsor the greatest rivalry in all of college football,” Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte said in a statement about the Red River Shootout. “There is no better tradition than the Red River Rivalry in a more unique and perfect atmosphere like the State Fair of Texas and the Cotton Bowl with ‘The Line,’ the Golden Hat trophy and all of the pageantry and passion of both universities on full display.”

Texas and Oklahoma have played 118 times, with the Longhorns leading the all-time series 63-50-5. The two teams have played each other in the Cotton Bowl for Red River Shootout annually since 1932. What was once a non-conference contest between a Southwest Conference institution and a Big 8 school became a conference matchup in 1996 when both teams joined the Big 12.

Come 2024, the Red River Shootout will be a SEC matchup. The game is under contract to remain in the Cotton Bowl until 2025, but both schools are intent on keeping the Red River Shootout at its historic home.

Sponsors and executives dropped the word “Shootout” during the early 2000s, electing to call it the “Red River Rivalry.” Then, beginning in 2013, the official name became the “Red River Showdown.”

“This is one of the most storied rivalries in college football, and we’re excited to be part of a game with such a rich history and spirited fans,” said Dan Keats, director of consumer marketing and sponsorship at Allstate, about the Red River Shootout. “We look forward to seeing both flagship universities face off at the Texas State Fair this year.”

Added OU athletics director Joe Castiglione about the Red River Shootout., “our annual, iconic matchup with the Longhorns each October features more than a century of tradition between our two programs, so it’s fitting that we revive the ‘Rivalry’ name. On the field, we’re certainly arch-rivals, with both our teams bringing fierce competition year after year. Allstate is a strong supporter of OU Athletics, and we’re in good hands with them as our Red River Rivalry title sponsor.”

The 119th matchup between Texas and Oklahoma is scheduled to take place on October 7. ABC has the rights to televise the Red River Shootout this year. A kickoff time has not been announced.
