The news wasn’t good. After Texas head coach Jim Schlossnagle said Thursday morning on AM 1300 The Zone that Longhorns ace Jared Spencer would get a medical opinion on his pitching arm, a report from the Houston Chronicle says that Spencer will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the remainder of the 2025 campaign.

Texas has confirmed that Spencer will miss the rest of the season.

Spencer had to leave his Thursday start versus Auburn last week after 2.2 innings. Schlossnagle and pitching coach Max Weiner noticed the lefty from Indiana State’s velocity dipped and made the switch after he surrendered a home run to Tiger star Ike Irish.

Spencer is 4-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 52.1 innings in 2025 with opponents hitting just .215 against him. In 13 appearances with five starts, Riojas is 7-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 48.2 innings. Opponents are hitting .221 against him.

Ruger Riojas is into Spencer’s place. In 13 appearances with five starts, Riojas is 7-1 with a 3.33 ERA in 48.2 innings. Opponents are hitting .221 against him. Schlossnagle said Luke Harrison will remain the Saturday starter. The Sunday starter will be TBA, but it’s expected that Jason Flores will take that role.

Harrison is 3-0 this season with a 2.98 ERA and a .241 batting average against. Flores is 4-1 in 2025 in 11 appearances with a 1.61 ERA across 28.0 innings. Opponents are hitting .179 against him.
