Texas baseball spent last weekend in Columbia, Mo., sweeping the Missouri Tigers in a three game series. While fans got a chance to see a series sweep, many following the team closely have been holding their breath on the news of three of the Longhorns best players.

Junior RF Max Belyeu, junior C Rylan Galvan and freshman 3B Adrian Rodriguez each sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity against the Tigers. Rodriguez was taken out of Friday’s game after a HBP. Belyeu finished Friday’s game, but didn’t appear for the rest of the weekend. Galvan caught in the first game of a double-header on Saturday, but also exited early after a foul tip collided with his index finger.

The big headline of this bunch comes with grim news for Texas fans. Belyeu, a Golden Spikes Award candidate and potential first round draft pick, will miss the rest of the regular season with a fractured thumb, as reported by Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball.

Belyeu made a great diving play in right field on Friday, which is suspected to be the play that caused this injury. The right fielder had already registered six home runs and 22 RBI as well as a 1.107 OPS in his first 24 games of the year, and was expected to be a potential SEC Player of the Year candidate for the rest of the season. It will be a huge loss for Texas.

UPDATE: Texas has labeled Belyeu as week to week.

On the more positive side, Galvan and Rodriguez are expected to be day-to-day from here on out, as also reported by Rogers.

As stated above, Rodriguez’s injury seemed the most severe of the group. Texas keeping the star freshman in the lineup for the rest of the season will be extremely important for a potential Omaha push. Galvan’s finger will likely keep him out of tomorrow night’s matchup against Texas State, but the veteran catcher has the potential to play against Georgia.

Galvan and Rodriguez join Belyeu as two of the six Longhorns with an OPS above .950, an elite mark throughout a whole season. Galvan leads the team in slugging percentage and is tied for the lead in homeruns, and Rodriguez is third on the team in doubles.

Texas fans can at least take solace in two starters returning to the lineup, but the loss of Belyeu will play a large factor in the potential of this team’s postseason hopes.
