Texas has dismissed Terry after two-plus seasons as head coach of the Longhorns men’s basketball program, according to multiple reports. Terry, who took over as acting head coach upon Chris Beard‘s arrest in December of 2022 and became interim head coach when Beard was dismissed, became the full-time head coach of the Longhorns after guiding Texas to the 2023 Elite Eight.

In two-plus seasons as head coach, Terry amassed a 62-37 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

247Sports and ESPN were first to report.

The move was made following the Longhorns exit from the NCAA Tournament at the hands of Xavier in the First Four. The Longhorns led by as much as 13 at one point, and held multiple double-digit leads in the second half. But Texas even at its full complement could not overcome the Musketeers and failed in familiar ways, ending the 2024-25 season in Dayton.

Terry was in his second stint on the bench at Texas. He was an assistant for Rick Barnes from 2002-11 before he became head coach at Fresno State. Terry was at UTEP when he was hired by Beard in 2021 to be associate head coach for the Longhorns.

Terry reached the Elite Eight as interim in 2023 and the second round as full-time head coach in 2024, and the made the tournament via the First Four in 2025.

According to Terry’s contract, he’s owed 60% of the remaining balance on his deal, a number around $5.4 million. That balance can be paid out in monthly installments, and any compensation earned at another basketball related job decreases the total Texas owes him dollar for dollar. Terry also has a duty to mitigate.

Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte now looks for his third full-time head men’s basketball coach since taking over the Longhorn athletic department in 2017. He oversaw the hire of Beard from Texas Tech in order to replace Shaka Smart then gave Terry the full-time job in 2023. Texas men’s basketball has reached the NCAA Tournament six times during his tenure with five NCAA Tournament wins between Beard and Terry in that time.
