Texas added Tre Johnson, Nic Codie, and Cam Scott during the November signing period, a group that ranks fifth nationally and second in the SEC behind No. 2 Kentucky.

Here’s what Terry had to say about each signee.

Tre Johnson

Rodney Terry: “I’ve been recruiting the state of Texas for a long time — 12 years here at Texas — and Tre Johnson is one of the best guards I’ve seen in the state of Texas. That’s pretty lofty in terms of some of the guys we were able to get when I was here in the previous tenure. He’s a guy that I’ve seen at a very high level from the very start of his recruitment. Sophomore year, I saw him play against elite level guys in Cason Wallace, guys that are top 10 picks; that are elite defensive players. Just gave those guys almost 40 points in game. Some guys are wired to score. He’s wired to score, but I think he also has a chance to be a really good two-way player. He has a chance to be a really good defender as well.

“He’s one of the elite players to come out of the state of Texas in terms of scoring the basketball that I’ve seen in my 27 years of recruiting the state of Texas. He’s elite. He has next-level ability, and he’s a gym rat. He’s one of those throwback guys like Kevin Durant that loves being in the gym.”

On3 Industry Ranking: No. 4 (5-star)
On3 Scouting Report: Johnson is as natural a scorer as there is in the class. Standing at a lengthy 6-5, he’s able to get the shot off over defenders. What really stands out is his ability to create space. His balance is great and can’t talk enough about the footwork. He still needs to continue working on the strength and distinguishing between a shot you can get and a good shot. Johnson has a smooth jump shot, with a repeatable form and release, no matter the level. He averaged 24.0 points on 40.7% 3P in Phoenix. – Jamie Shaw

Nic Codie

Rodney Terry: “I’m excited about Nic Codie. He has a high ceiling as well. Late bloomer. He’s going to have a chance to be a really good player as well and has a chance to be an impact player.”

On3 Industry Ranking: No. 45 (4-star)
On3 Scouting Report: The upside of Nic Codie is so intriguing. Standing in the 6-8 range with a reported 7-2 wingspan, you like the way he moves. This gives him upside on the defensive end, with the fluidity to slide his feet and the length to get in the passing lanes and rotate on the block. Offensively, he is crafty in the paint. He has a quick, off-cadence release from 15-feet and in and he is confident with a jump hook or floater with his right hand. While the ball skills are still raw and he will need to continue working on the balance and footwork, he shows the ability to step out and knock down a three. That potential spacing the jump shot would provide is a nice added bonus to his game. There is a lot to like here, and Codie is younger for his grade. His dad, Nakia Codie, played defensive back in the NFL.

Cam Scott

Rodney Terry: “Same thing. NBA athleticism. Guy that can score the ball for us. Big time athlete. NBA size.”

On3 Industry Ranking: No. 34 (4-star)
On3 Scouting Report: Scott is a lengthy wing prospect with a lot of pop. The natural tools are very impressive all the way around. Scott has a mature game, plays within the flow of the offense, rarely forces things. The jump shot release can be cleaned up a little, but the pull-up is smooth. Since the summer, Scott has developed his footwork and handle in the half-court, creating space to elevate into his jumper. Scott can take over a game carry his team. Would like to see him develop the comfort to take a more aggressive, alpha role on his teams. He is very efficient in his game, his ability to score with a less is more approach is mature. Strength will come, and he is tracking as one of the top players in the 2024 class.

Staff Kudos

Rodney Terry: “Three really good young players that have a chance to be really good players in Longhorn uniforms for us. We’re excited about those guys. Great starting point for us right now. Staff, give those guys a lot of kudos in terms of what they were able to do in the recruiting process. Brandon (Chappell) did a great job with Nic Codie. Frank (Haith) did an incredible job with Tre. Ty Larson, from a non-recruiting position, did a great job with Cam Scott developing a great relationship. Our staff did a great job in terms of developing relationships, and identifying guys that we think can come in here and be really good players for us next season.”
