The season is rapidly approaching its conclusion and there are only three teams in contention for the SEC Championship, but several other Southeastern Conference programs are in the conversation for a playoff spot. A focus on the top makes sense, especially with the SEC Championship a few weeks away.

1. Texas

The only team with a single loss in conference play is deserving of the top spot, no matter what the naysayers want to talk about in reference to the Longhorns’ schedule. Texas can win and lock up a spot in Atlanta.

2. Georgia

Georgia has already locked up a spot in the SEC Championship game as a result of its 6-2 SEC record and win over Texas. Losses from Ole Miss and Alabama over the weekend gave the Bulldogs the right to go ahead and book the short, quick drive from Athens to Atlanta. The Dawgs can’t overlook Georgia Tech or else the SEC title game might be Georgia’s only path into the playoff considering where Kirby Smart’s program has been ranked this year.

3. Tennessee

Tennessee has to get past a plucky Vanderbilt team in order to essentially lock up a spot in the playoff. They aren’t able to make it to Atlanta, but they should be in the 12-team field.

4. Texas A&M

Four overtimes? Auburn? This Auburn? The way it ended? Footballs are oddly shaped and it didn’t bounce the Aggies’ way on the Plains. However, they can still achieve a ninth win and earn a spot in the SEC title game with a win this week. Who are they playing?

5. Alabama

Kalen DeBoer is now responsible for Alabama’s first three-loss season since 2010. Alabama hasn’t had a four-loss season since 2007, which was when Nick Saban lost six games (including one to ULM).

6. Ole Miss

Lane Kiffin talked about not placing importance on the conference championship, and he won’t have to worry about that after a loss to Florida in the Swamp. There’s a greater problem at hand for the Rebels now in that their all-in season could result in them missing the 12-team playoffs.

7. South Carolina

What a year for the Gamecocks, who are a few plays and a few different calls away from… 10-1? It didn’t work out that way, but Shane Beamer did a great job in a crucial season and there’s plenty to play for against Clemson this weekend.

8. LSU

The Tigers handled Vanderbilt, and now will welcome Oklahoma to Death Valley for the first time ever.

9. Missouri

They beat Mississippi State. Finding a less impressive 8-3 team is a task.

10. Florida

Billy Napier has somehow grabbed momentum after his job seemed at significant risk. DJ Lagway is playing well, they are bowl eligible, and a 7-5 record is well within the realm of possibility with the dismal Florida State Seminoles left. Not bad?
