Texas has taken its lumps on the recruiting trail in the first part of July, but the Longhorns earned a high-quality commitment from 2026 Katy (Texas) Mayde Creek linebacker Kosi Okpala on Thursday to help get some fireworks going ahead of America’s birthday.

With a number of high-profile recruitments to be announced in the coming days, the Longhorns could jump from their current No. 16 standing in the Rivals team recruiting rankings.

Texas is currently hampered as far as the rankings go due to the presence of three specialists commitments in Steve Sarkisian‘s 2026 class. Those three prospects are ranked No. 1691, No. 1695, and No. 1703 overall, respectively.

The team recruiting rankings currently use an average of 16 commits as data in an equation to create a class score. That score is then sorted to create the rankings. Texas currently has 16 commits, so as more pledges are added, the lowest ranked player in the class will fall out of the equation and a higher-ranked player will take his place.

Texas is awaiting decisions from Felix Ojo, John Turntine, and several others on July 4th. Any addition to Texas’ class would likely bump long snapper Trott O’Neal from the equation. If Texas replaced O’Neal with a five-star like Ojo or a four-star like Turntine? Texas would likely vault back into the top 10, a place it was just a few days ago.

Texas is tracking the following decisions in July and should the Longhorns bring more prospects into the fold, they should see their average rating and the score used to create the rankings increase.
