SMU transfer Velton Gardner commits to Texas
Texas had a major need at running back and a scholarship open. SMU transfer Velton Gardner decided to fill both. Gardner announced his decision to commit to Texas on Wednesday night.

Gardner started his career at Kansas before transferring to SMU. In three years with the Jayhawks from 2019 through 2021, Gardner tallied 519 yards with four touchdowns. He made a handful of brief appearances against the Longhorns in 2019, tallying three total touches for eight yards.
At SMU, Gardner recorded 102 carries for 505 yards and two touchdowns across 2022 and 2023.
A member of the class of 2019, Gardner was ranked as the No. 812 overall prospect, the No. 8 athlete, and the No. 105 player in Texas in the 2019 class.
He joins a running back room in Austin that saw likely starter CJ Baxter plus promising freshman Christian Clark succumb to season-ending injuries. Gardner joins a room that features Jaydon Blue, Tre Wisner, and Jerrick Gibson.
