Inside Texas has not confirmed his position but we understand it to be Gary Patterson‘s old role of special assistant to the head coach.

Hazelton has almost three decades of college and professional coaching experience. He’s been a defensive coordinator at his alma mater Fort Lewis, Missouri Southern State, North Dakota State, Nevada, Wyoming, Kansas State, and Michigan State.

Hazelton was defensive coordinator for North Dakota State during the program’s first FCS national championship, the start of a dynastic run that saw the Bison win eight more titles over the next decade. He left Fargo for USC, spending one year in Los Angeles on Lane Kiffin‘s staff as linebackers coach. He spent one year as defensive coordinator at Nevada before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars as an assistant linebackers coach.

He returned to the college game in 2017 to be defensive coordinator at Wyoming. He made the jump to the Power Five when he joined Chris Klieman‘s staff in 2019, though he only remained in with KSU for one season. From 2020 to 2023, he coordinated the defense for Tucker in East Lansing. Following the arrival of Jonathan Smith, Hazelton was not retained.

This is his first role since his tenure with the Spartans.

Hazelton, a native of Brighton, Colo., is married and has four children.
