Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian emphasizes culture consistently because of how much of a difference he believes it makes over the course of the season. He has repeatedly attributed several of Texas’ 12 wins in 2023 to his program’s culture in recent months and did so again at SEC Media Days.

“Our culture is what makes us who we are,” Sarkisian said last week. “We take a lot of pride in our culture. We pour into our culture. We are a very connected group. We love one another. We work with one another. That’s not going to change. But at the University of Texas, part of the standard being the standard is competing for championships.”

That was something Sarkisian made sure to emphasize in Dallas when addressing gathered media and even those watching who aren’t part of the press. And when speaking to members of the coaching fraternity at the Texas High School Coaches Association’s convention in San Antonio on Tuesday, it was something he continued to stress.

Sark’s presentation wasn’t about some of his signature play-action concepts like “Thumb” or “Leak.” Rather it was culture, culture, and more culture. Sark put a heavy emphasis on how important it is to have players one through one-hundred thinking, acting, and working toward the same goal.

He once again mentioned how culture led Texas to success in 2023 and how much he has players bought-in on and off the field. He stated that he knew the culture was changing when players were actually starting to learn from mistakes and actively trying to correct and fix them themselves without the help of coaches.

Sarkisian pointed to how instead of having one or two guys be leaders of the team, multiple people started stepping up to lead after earning the respect of teammates. That group was constantly encouraging and trying to get everybody on the exact same page. Sark said he feels when the majority of the guys are trying to do things the right way, lifting each other up, and holding each other accountable, it’s truly a team committed to winning.

Sarkisian also said culture shows up in the fourth quarter when a team needs a crucial drive, a big stop, or a first down. He repeated several of his favorite phrases, like “the way you do anything is how you do everything,” or “competing every day shows up when you need it most,” and so on.

Rather than talk scheme with coaches, Sark talked culture. And like his messaging of the past few years, he remained incredibly consistent.
