Steve Sarkisian named AP's Big 12 coach of the year, other Longhorns receive All-Big 12 honors
After the conference itself snubbed Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian for Big 12 coach of the year honors, the Associated Press decided to bestow their iteration of the award on the third-year Longhorns head coach. Sarkisian was voted the AP coach of the year, the organization announced Friday.

Longhorn players were honored as well. T’Vondre Sweat took home Big 12 defensive player of the year honors and Adonai Mitchell was named the league’s newcomer of the year.

The Longhorns had six honorees on the All-Big 12 first team. The AP All-Big 12 team is voted on by a panel of 23 who regularly cover the league. The Texas first-team honorees were Xavier Worthy (who was honored for his exploits as a wide receiver and an all-purpose player), Bert Auburn, T’Vondre Sweat, Byron Murphy, and Jaylan Ford.
Longhorns to make the All-Big 12 second team were Mitchell, Kelvin Banks, Quinn Ewers, and Jonathon Brooks.
Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon was named the league’s offensive player of the year.
