Ewers, an Ohio State transfer who originally attended Southlake (Texas) Carroll in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, was named starter over third-year quarterback Hudson Card.
The No. 1 overall player in the 2021 On3 Consensus and a Five-Star Plus+ prospect, Ewers transferred to Texas from Ohio State after he spent one season in Columbus. Originally a member of the class of 2022, Ewers re-classified to 2021 and enrolled at Ohio State just before the 2021 season started in order to begin his college career and take advantage of NIL opportunities not available to him in Texas as a high school athlete.
Texas topped Texas Tech for his services after Ewers entered the portal on December 3, 2021.
Ewers is listed at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds. Prior to Ohio State, he was a standout for the Carroll Dragons, leading them to the 2020 UIL 6A Division I State championship game where he played through several injuries in a loss to the Westlake Chaparrals.

He was originally committed to previous Longhorns head coach Tom Herman, but decommitted from the program on October 28, 2020. Less than a month later, he committed to Ryan Day and the Buckeyes. He appeared in a handful of in-game snaps for Ohio State in 2021, but C.J. Stroud’s emergence as a Heisman finalist made playing time tough to come by for the highly sought-after prospect.
On3 Scouting Report: Touted as one of the best underclassman quarterback prospects in a few cycles early on his high school career. Skipped his senior season in order to graduate and enroll at Ohio State. Has elite accuracy with the ability to consistently place the football in small windows. Plays with advanced timing, often throwing the ball before receivers show themselves to be open. Sees the field naturally. Willing to stand in the pocket in the face of pressure and deliver downfield. Throws with a three-quarters to sidearm release. Has a strong arm with considerable zip on intermediate passes. Showed above average mobility as a sophomore before being hampered with a hernia as a junior. Played very well against top competition in the state of Texas as a sophomore and junior. Older for his initial cycle (2022) and may have been closer to his physical ceiling than others at that early stage. Missed out on crucial game experience by forgoing his senior season, which could affect his long-term development.
